Description Stephan van den Akker 2018-04-18 09:06:42 UTC
The option to remove cropped areas of an image could be added to the "Compress Image" dialog. It is a useful addition in order to save memory usage and to reduce the final document size on disk.

Note: This option is already implemented in the Presentation Minimizer in Impress.

Sounds reasonable, but as with all things that bring new entries to dialogs, let's consult design team.

Contra the request is the existence of the minimizer. Impress is not an image manipulation tool and hard crop would be such a function. On the other hand, as a pro, there is no minimize wizard in Writer/Calc/Draw.

If we go ahead we could
a) add tools > options > load/save > [x] Save original images (or rather two radio buttons with (o) Soft crop images, () Hard crop)
b) add the option "[ ] Cut cropped areas" to the format > image > compress dialog
c) add the button "Hard resize" to the format > image > properties: crop (e.g. next to Original Size)
d) introduce a new UNO command that cuts off the cropped area and provide the function per context menu
e) introduce a new UNO command that runs through all images in a document and cuts

As a completely different solution, paste special > as bitmap (rather all but SVXB) could ignore the cropped areas.

But I vote for WF. If cutting is needed the user better takes an image manipulation program.

Tomaz, what's your opinion?

I already expressed my opinion in the main bug about "Compress Image" dialog.

"Compress Image" dialog should include the option to remove cropped areas and an option to modify all images in the document.

No automatic cropping or UNO commands necessary as you can't crop without deciding how to re-compress the image. This things all go hand in hand.

Taking Tomaz input as word from UX.

This seems to be a reference to bug 34133#c17
