If I open the previous attachment, I get a transparent background in either openoffice or libreoffice. See the test-case.png screenshot and note how the grid continues inside the picture perimeter.

Created attachment 45434 [details] test case On Linux (Kubuntu 10.10 64bit) To reproduce 1) Open sample presentation (document A in the following). Note that it contains an image with a transparent background 2) Without closing document A, open a new empty presentation or a new empty drawing (document B in the following) 3) Go to document A, select the image and Edit->Copy 4) Go to document B and Edit->Paste Note that the pasted image has a non-transparent background.
