E.g. in Writer you can choose from quite a few font colors, but cannot choose another one.

This bug was filed before the changes to Bugzilla on 2011-10-16. Thus it
started right out as NEW without ever being explicitly confirmed. The bug is
changed to state NEEDINFO for this reason. To move this bug from NEEDINFO back
to NEW please check if the bug still persists with the 3.5.0 beta1 or beta2 prereleases.

Additional colors can now (3.5.0) be specified in the 'Colors' section of the LO options.

However, this is not very convenient if the user wants to quickly change a color. 

I suggest that the pop-up lets the user choose between several palettes, open this (http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/3.5#GUI) color picker and provides an eye dropper tool.
