Today after updating LibreOffice to 3.5.1.2 
Build-ID: 350m1(Build:102) on Ubuntu 10.04 64bit the following severe problem occured:
I have many documents with text formated as hidden. In LO 3.5.1 this text seems to be away. It's not visible, markable or editable. I can see hidden text in the document only, if I open the printing-dialog and check the box 'hidden text'. Then the hidden text is visible in the small printing preview of the printing-dialog and in the document. If I close the printing-dialog the hidden text is gone. So hidden text is printed correctly, this is a big problem for me, because if I can't see and edit this text in a document anymore it's nearly the same as a data-loss.

The problem stays in 3.5.2.2.
This is a very severe problem for me, because I can't edit and insert text, which is formatted as hidden, anymore. For I have a lot of documents with hidden text, a solution for this problem is very urgent for me.

Problem stays after upgrading my Ubuntu to 12.04! Problem stays in 3.5.4 too! On Windows XP with LO 3.5.3 this problem doesn't exist.

The problem is solved. I have to set an option in LO Writer: in the section formatting helps I have to check the ckeckbox: show ... hidden text.
I think this is perhaps a new option or this option was unset while upgrading LO to 3.5.1, because in earlier versions of LO hidden text was always shown without setting this option.

This does not work in LibreOffice version 4.2.4.2. Irrespective of the setting "Hidden text" in Tools - Options - LibreOffice Writer, Formatting Aids, text formatted as hidden text does not anymore display, and for practical purposes is lost.

Steps to reproduce the issue

1) Open a blank document, open a phrase of text.
2) Select a few words, then Format - Character - Font Effects - Hidden
3) In Tools - Options - LibreOffice Writer, Formatting Aids, check "Hidden text". The text still does not display.

Horrible regression which breaks the useability of hidden text.

Correction: suddenly I was able to display hidden text with "Nonprinting characters" provided "Hidden text" was checked.
