On pc Debian x86-64, with branch 3.5 updated yesterday, I don't reproduce this problem. Could you give a try to a newer version (eg : 3.5.3 ) ? If needed, you could also try with a new LO profile (see http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile). Upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 and got LibreOfice 3.5.3 into the bargain. Created attachment 61639 [details] Excel Spreadsheet in 2003 format, causing crash. On Ubuntu 11.10, using LibreOffice 3.4.4 build 402, the attached Excel spreadsheet causes the app to hang. The same file opens fine in NeoOffice on the Mac, Excel 2010 and Excel 2000.
