So if I understand this right: Setup file a.ods and put the value "the" in A1 without quotes Setup file b.ods, set A1 =FILEPATH/a.ods'#$Sheet1.A1 Save both. Open a.ods, open b.ods, click "yes" for update link See: works Close both, open b.ods, select yes for update links You observed an error, I do not. Assuming these steps are correct, marking as WFM as it seems like it is now resolved. Problem description: Say you have 2 spreadsheets A and B. B names some cell set in A say 'dataset'. Furthermore, B has some cells whose content is a formula whose value depends on a search done in 'dataset'. If you open A and then you open B, on opening B, libreoffice says that B has cells with content linking stuff in another file and asks if you want to update it. If you say 'yes', then B becomes visible with all the updated content from A in its cells. Conversely, if you open B, but you have not opened A before B, libreoffice still recognizes the presence of linked content. Furthermore it still asks if you want to update the cells based on the linked content. However, after you answer yes or no, B becomes visible with all the cells based on the content of A in an error state. Apache Openoffice 3.4.1 has the same problem. However, I am almost sure that ancient versions of Sun openoffice used to do it right.
