Description Heiko Tietze 2012-09-19 10:17:52 UTC
With wide screen monitor one can use some nice features of Writer. I have the navigator attached to the left side for easy access to chapters and styles window to the right to format text properly. But when I switch from Writer to Impress these sidebars are still shown (although they are useless) along with the sidebars slides and tasks.
Perhaps four sidebars will be usable once screens have an aspect ration of 21:9, but by now it is a little bit annoying to configure the UI every time. So I suggest to make UI preferences module specific.

Hi Heiko,
Could you please provide repro steps for docking the Navigator and the Styles window to the left- and right-hand sides of the main window?

When you do, please change the status from NEEDINFO back to UNCONFIRMED.

Thanks,

There is not much to say about repro. Just open the navigator toolbar (aka document structure) in Writer per F5 or the like and dock the frame to the left side. Close writer, open Impress and you will get the navigator frame left hand (along with the slides frame which is more relevant here). Undock and close the frame - and it is gone in writer too.
My advice is to make the UI configuration persistent for all modules individually.

TESTING in LibreOffice 4.2.0.1 + Ubuntu 12.04.3

I'm not sure how to dock the Navigation Toolbar to the left side (or any side) of the main window in 4.2.0.1. I also tried testing in 3.5.7.2, and was unable to dock the toolbar in that version as well.

Joel - Can you help w/repro here?

As far as I can tell they are specific to the component. I set up writer to have navigator on the left, styles and formatting on the right, then I closed writer, opened impress, navigator was open, closed navigator, closed impress. Opened writer, everything was there (navigator left, styles/formatting on the right), closed right, opened impress and nothing was there.

If I'm understanding correctly, this was the desired usability and it does in fact work this way, no reason to set things up every time.

Ubuntu 13.10
LibreOffice 4.2 RC1

If this isn't the behavior you were expecting, or if you cannot reproduce what I said above with 4.2 RC1, please mark as UNCONFIRMED and give us additional information. Thanks!

As with any dockable widget you move it around like dragging [1]. If you find the designed area where it can be docked, a temporarily frame shows the final position and the toolbar is docked when the mouse button is released.

But whether docked or not, Writer and Impress do not have separate settings for toolbars/sidebars. Maybe Joel applied some magic configuration tweaks but I struggle with this issue for years.

Current version is 4.1.4.2 Arch Linux build-1.

[1] BTW: It would be a good idea to add a static header with a caption that not only denotes the toolbar's content but allows easy grabbing too.

So are my steps that I provided incorrect? Or if you follow them exactly, you get a different result?

Your steps are correct but I don't get the expected behavior.

1. Open Writer, F5 to show Navigator, close Writer
2. Open Impress (Navigator is shown), close Navigator, close Impress
3. Open Writer, (Navigator is NOT shown)

Okay so after digging I know the difference - try with 4.2 RC 1 and you'll see the behavior you want. Still WFM - just won't backport it to 4.1 as we almost never do this for enhancement requests (way too hard to dig through the code to find out what changed).

I tested with 4.1.3 and I see the incorrect behaviour but with 4.2 RC1 it is correct
Comment 10 Heiko Tietze 2013-12-28 18:58:32 UTC
Okay, it works well in 4.2 RC.
But now I cannot dock the sidebar, perhaps because I haven't installed the debs (just extracted). Maybe that's the reason for Qubit's confusion too. I'll report this issue if it's still in the final release.
Many thanks for your work!
