Description Henry Beitz 2013-01-20 19:08:58 UTC
When combining data from various spreadsheets which have been entered using two different formats - in my case Text and Numbers - the Text items persist on being Text (preceding ') even when the entire sheet is selected and I try to force all cells to be formatted as Numbers.

@reporter:
Thank you for your report – unfortunately important information is missing.
May be hints on <http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport> will help you to find out what information will be useful to reproduce your problem?
Please:
- Write a meaningful Summary describing exactly what the problem is
- Attach a sample document (not only screenshot) or refer to an existing
sample document in an other Bug with a link; to attach a file to this
bug report, just click on "Add an attachment" right on this page.
- Attach screenshots with comments if you believe that that might explain the
problem better than a text comment. Best way is to insert your screenshots
into a DRAW document and to add comments that explain what you want to show
(attachment 68877 [details], attachment 68490 [details])
- Contribute a document related step by step instruction containing every
key press and every mouse click how to reproduce your problem
(similar to example in Bug 43431)
– if possible contribute an instruction how to create a sample document
  from the scratch
- add information
  -- what EXACTLY is unexpected
-- and WHY do you believe it's unexpected (cite Help or Documentation!)
-- concerning your PC (video card, ...)
-- concerning your OS (Version, Distribution, Language)
-- concerning your LibO localization (UI language, Locale setting)
–- Libo settings that might be related to your problems
-- how you launch LibO and how you opened the sample document
–- Whether your problem persists when you renamed your user profile
before you launch LibO (please see
     <https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile#User_profile_location>)
-- everything else crossing your mind after you read linked texts

May be you want to test <https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/bug/> for submitting bug reports? You reach that Bug Submission Assistant via LibO menu 'Help -> Feedback / Bug Report'. The assistant will collect and insert such information automatically.

Demonstration of problem

Column A has 4 entries which all appear to be numbers. Column B is a description of what the entries in column A actually are. The text items - A1 and A4 - have a preceding '.

If A1:A4 is selected and then the menu Format|Cell is invoked; then the tab Numbers is chosen with Category = Number and Format = General; and then the Button OK is clicked on - this does not change the Text items to Numbers - they remain Text.

@reporter:
Why do you think that that is a bug?
"'45" is very similar to "forty five", what also will not become "45" only because you change formatting of the cell. Please cite some Help or similar what tells that your expectation is correct!
Comment 5 Henry Beitz 2013-01-21 12:05:30 UTC
I agree that it may not be a bug.

The 'numbers' in the column may not be sorted (correctly - that is).

When trying to format them as numbers LibreOffice should have no trouble recognizing that some of the values are not 'numbers' and should perhaps open a dialog box to offer me the opportunity to convert the 'text' numbers to 'numeric' numbers. This would make it possible for me to sort them.

I will submit it as a feature proposal.

Henry Beitz
