When saving an existing MS 2003 .xls spreadsheet with a Text Box to LibO .ods format using LibreOffice Calc 4.0 on a machine running Windows XP, the following message appears: “Error saving the document ‘name’: Write error. The file could not be written. [OK]”. Same result on another machine running Windows 7. In each case, the save operation succeeded after the Text Box was removed. In neither case did this cause the Error Report Tool to start. In another test on a machine running Debian, the above save succeeded. Furthermore, the resulting saved .obs file was put back one of the above Windows machines, and the same save test succeeded.
To reproduce:
On a Windows XP (or 7) machine, create a new Excel 2003 (or 2007) file. Add a Text Box. Put some data in at least one cell. Save. Now open the file in LibreOffice Calc 4.0 and Save As an .ods file. Error message should appear. Now, remove the Text Box, and again save as an .ods file. Save should succeed.

On Windows XP (SP3), the same Text-Box-containing .xls file -- obtained from the person who reported the bug -- was correctly saved as .ods by LibreOffice 3.3.2.2.
On Debian Wheezy with LibreOffice 3.5.4.2, it worked fine also.
That seems to narrow the problem down to version 4.0.

not reproducible with LO 4.0.1.2 (Win7 Home, 64bit)

@Steve: Does this issue still persist for you with the latest release of LO?

I installed 4.0.1.2 today and am delighted to report that it works with my text box test. I tested it on a Windows 7 machine and on an XP machine. Both downloaded the Win_x86 code.
Thanks for the good news.

I added a comment to bugzilla 61075 - LO 4.0.1.2 works for me, as you
indicate. Thanks very much.
