Description rune.bjorneras 2013-03-29 21:18:57 UTC
Problem description:

I am not able to insert formatted comments in Word files and at the same time indicate what text the comments apply to.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a .docx- or .doc-file.
2. Insert a comment and write something, or select an existing comment.
3. Try to format the text in the comment, if possible.
4. Save and reopen the file.

Current behavior:
With .docx-files: The formatting toolbar is greyed out (but paradoxically slowly enough to make formatting possible for a split second).
With .doc-files: Formatting is fine, but comments show no indication as to what part of the text they apply to.

Expected behavior:

Explained above.
Operating System: Ubuntu
Version: 4.0.2.1 rc

An .odt file saved from a .docx file will behave in the same way as the original .docx-file, by the way.

Thanks for reporting.

I can not reproduce this behavior using Linux Mint 14 x64 with LibreOffice 4.0.2.2. This seems like the same issue I had a while ago (see fixed bug 60738). Is it possible to attach a doc file which you can reproduce this behavior with?

Is this behavior also reproducible using LibreOffice 4.0.2.2 release (which you can download here http://www.libreoffice.org/download)?

Kind regards,
Joren

Thanks for looking into this.

I now have 4.0.2.2, and the situation is more bearable now. The formatting toolbar still grays out quickly when creating and initially writing the comment. However, I can finish the comment, click somewhere else and then reselect the comment to format the text.

I am adding an attachment:
- File created with LibreOffice.
- Sample text entered.
- File saved as .docx and reopened.
- Consecutive comments added will gray out the formatting toolbar.

I also notice, like in e.g. bug 37130, that comments for some reason use the system default font rather than the default font in Options -> LibreOffice Writer -> Basic Fonts. Whether this is related to the comment formatting bug I do not know.

Thanks for you extra information.

I also can not reproduce this behavior using Mac OSX 10.8.3. When I click on the comment, select some text, it is still possible to make the text bold/underline/italic/change font.

Therefore I'm going to mark this bug back to UNCONFIRMED.

@Joel: can you please give this one a try?

Kind regards,
Joren

hm, very strange, also cannot reproduce.

can you try resetting your profile: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile

be aware that this will make it so you lose all your settings, best to have a backup. If we determine it's your profile then we know it's system specific
Comment 7 rune.bjorneras 2013-04-09 17:40:16 UTC
Resetting the profile does not change anything.

As mentioned, this is not really a big issue for me anymore. I still cannot format a freshly made comment right away, but I can make formatting work by:
1. Creating a comment
2. Writing something in the comment
3. Clicking anywhere else outside the comment
4. Clicking back inside the comment

I can live with this, and am making the switch from Word in Wine to LibreOffice.

The attached video will perhaps show the issue more clearly.

Very interesting, also cannot confirm. Watched the video and tested, nothing here. Because you're unable to confirm the original behavior and you're satisfied with the current behaviour I am going to go ahead and mark this as WFM as Joren and I both have tested without success of reproducing.

If this isn't acceptable please mark as UNCONFIRMED again and we'll try to track down exactly what's going on but it seems like something particular to your setup . . . no clue what ;) Glad you've made the transition to LibreOffice though :-D
