First of all this seems to only happen in the KDE desktop environment.

1.  Configure your system to use ibus and configure an input method such as "Chinese - Intelligent Pinyin.
2.  Start LibreOffice Writer.
3.  Type some text in English
4.  Switch to Chinese input and type "yang" for example and pick the appropriate character (楊, for example)
5.  Move your cursor to another window such as konsole and click in the window to gain focus.
6.  Move your cursor back to LibreOffice and click to regain focus.
7.  You will no longer be able to type Chinese.  You will need to quit LibreOffice and restart to regain the ability to type Chinese.

I have just confirmed that the issue is *not* present in 4.0.3.  So, the answer is to upgrade.
