Description LaurentZG 2013-09-01 10:53:46 UTC
Hello,

I have previously done a bug report about the same issue in connection with "Load/Save - General - AutoRecovery/backup" here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=67831 , but the flickering rendering text and menus inaccessible still exist. This time with the 4.2 alpha, but I have found that it is not necessary related to the the "Load/Save" features.

As previous time with version 4.1 I had checked the settings:

- "Save AutoRecovery information every 5 min"
- "Automatically save the documents too"
- "Always create backup copy"

This time I had copied a text from internet with picture illustrations when it first started. And as previous time I had to open a new document to access the settings and turn them off. When I had done this and clicked Ok the flickering stopped. But after a while, while the options above was turned off, the flickering started again. If I do not remember wrong it was when downloading the last pictures in the document. The downloading was done automatically by Writer while scrolling further down in the document. Meaning, it was not by manual copy/paste from the internet page. I solved it by activating the options above in a new document, and then deactivating them again. Meaning clicking Ok twice.

For reproduction try to copy a large text on the internet with several pictures and paste it into Writer. Let Writer download the pictures by itself. Format all text from the original font to something else. Scroll down the document and change the font sizes for the paragraph headings. As going down towards the end of the document the flickering should start.

Alternatively try to begin with the settings mentioned in previous post activated.

Perhaps same problem as bug 46635 : FILESAVE Endless loop during autosave

Please, could you check ?

Thank you very much. JBF

I also observed a flickering if the option "Automatically save the documents too" is enabled. And it is indeed caused by the autosave function. But it is not bug 46635 (reported according ver. 3.5), hence the mentioned option has been introduced later (Ver. 4.1).

In order to reproduce the bug I did this:

[1] Start LibreOffice and enable option "Save AutoRecovery information" and set the time period to 1 minute.
[2] Enable option "Automatically save the document too".
[3] Save options with OK and close LibreOffice. Closing LibreOffice is necessary due to bug 76950.
[4] Start LibreOffice again.
[5] Create new text document and insert some text.
[6] Wait. After 1 minute 3 flickers occure (3 autosaves?!). Expected: Just one autosave. Afterwards all 10 sec there are 3 flickers/autosaves. Expected: No more autosaves.

In order to check if a flicker is identical to an autosave, just insert a lot of text and wait. I tested it with one hundred pages with text.

If you increase the document further (500 pages of text on my system) it is not possible to further operate LibreOffice. I had to cancel LibreOffice by the Task Manager.

I assume that bug 67831 is a duplicate of this bug.

Tested with version 4.2.2.1 under Win 7.

Behaviour of comment 3 checked again with different versions. Versions 4.3.2 and 4.3.3 are now OK. In versions 4.2.4 and 4.3.1 the bug still exists. I did not check 4.2.5 to 4.2.7. Hence WORKSFORME now.

I assume that the bug has been fixed by fixing bug 46635 or bug 71625.
