Bug 74191

Summary: UI: Some Hi-Contrast theme icons hard to read in Win7 Basic Theme
Product: LibreOffice Reporter: tgr
Component: UIAssignee: Not Assigned <libreoffice-bugs>
Status: RESOLVED FIXED
Severity: trivial CC: barta
Priority: low
Version: 4.1.4.2 release
Hardware: x86 (IA32)
OS: Windows (All)
Whiteboard: BSA
Crash report or crash signature: Regression By:
Attachments: toolbar icons at top are wrong
my cursor points at "Centered" text alignment option, which then is visible(black backround shows), but mouse cursor itself is invisible on screenshot, sorry my bad.

Description tgr 2014-01-29 15:17:32 UTC
Problem description:
Bug probably appeared in earlier LibO versions too.
Some UI Icons are white on white ( Bold, Wyrównanie) or light-gray on white (Cut, Undo,Redo) in Windows 7 Basic Theme

So they are very non-contrasting and hard-readable.

There was Windows 7 Basic - based theme used before, after changing to exact Windows 7 Basic, problem persists.

Steps to reproduce:
1. In "Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization"
Select "Windows 7 Basic"
2. run eg. Writer

Current behavior:
Some UI Icons are are very non-contrasting and hard-readable.

Expected behavior:

Simpliest?? - Icon Image and Icon Background and colour should
be exchanged.
Contrast, when low, should be strenghted.
So UI should be contrast-aware.

Operating System: Windows 7
Version: 4.1.4.2 release

look like you are using the hi-contrast theme (tools/options/view/icon style)
do you know you can change themes?
Comment 4 tgr 2014-01-29 21:16:27 UTC
Ok, I know. Just found it. Not sure if I set it by myself.

But having clear, High Contrast icons would be great
eg. on sunny day. Room for improvement here.

as far as I know the hi-contrast theme is a very old theme inherited from OOo.
IMHO is the ugliest and less usable of all the bunch and I'm not aware of many users employing it.

probably the mix of hi-contrast LibO icons and Win7 basic theme is a bad match as I can see from your screenshot...

so the workaround is to use a different LibO icon theme or a different Win7 theme

I change summary notes and I set status to NEW though I'm tempted to label this as NOTABUG.

Suppose I have low-end computer with quite sunlight-readable screen.
So I need only high contrasts and Windows 7 Basic Theme (slow graphics).
Might ut be, I could Set simpler, high-contrast theme, but my icons wouldn't be in high contrast.

Maybe, removing that icon theme from program is one solution to this problem - so there will be new functionality to add - new contrasting theme.

Ok, If you can, do something good with this. I'm low on time.
Could be a problem for some casual or impaired user as I noted above and we can imagine.
Anyway, no big problem for me anymore.

OOOk, my earlier sentence "Might ut be, I could Set simpler, high-contrast theme, but my icons wouldn't be in high contrast." has no sense.

But anyway, after setting "High Contrast White" Win 7 Theme,
icons still are unreadable. BUT when my cursor points them, they are.
I think it should work at least inversely or ..
we can dream of icons that, when selected, are
marked by rectagle drawn from lines and spaces, which are moving, so it gets any attention.

Anyway, not that bad now.

Ok I understand what you mean.
basically you ask redesign of that theme to improve it's readability.
if there some user interested doing the job he/she is welcome

in the meantime a new theme has been added in 4.2.0.
see here: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/4.2#Flat_icons_.28Sifr.29

maybe it would be an alternative to the hi-conntrast theme.

I think that icon set fully resolves this problem in all use cases.
Maybe, if one would like to see inverted icons at night..but it would be new feature.
