I tried to sort alphabetically (ascending) and the program crashed. It crashed each time I tried to do this.

On which env are you (Windows, Linux, MacOs)?
Which LO version do you use?
Do you reproduce this on a brand new file?

When I created a new document it worked just fine.  I went back to the original document and re-tried the sort and it worked just fine.  Thank you so much for your email and your willingness to help!!!

BTW, to know your LO ("LibreOffice") version, just click on "Help" menu, then "About LibreOffice".
