Similar to bug 85470, but saving an .xls file to .xls (no format change) Version 5.1.3.2 OSX Yosemite (10.10.5) Hangs for ~3 minutes at 98% CPU, then unfreezes and resumes normally. No error messages.
@Sarah : please provide more details, and a sample test file where this is reproducible. Does it happen with any XLS file that you resave to XLS, or only specific ones ? setting needinfo
Ok, so I tested with the attached file. I enabled macros, and then made one letter change in a text cell and saved back to xls. Saving took about 1min 30s, certainly not 3 minutes. Given the relative complexity of the XLS file, not confirming. Version: 5.1.3.2 Build ID: 644e4637d1d8544fd9f56425bd6cec110e49301b CPU Threads: 2; OS Version: Mac OS X 10.11.5; UI Render: default; Locale: fr-FR (fr.UTF-8) This was tested on a Mac mini (mid-2010), so quite an old machine. I'll compare the same file with older versions of LO.

No repro either with Version: 5.2.0.4 Build ID: 066b007f5ebcc236395c7d282ba488bca6720265 CPU Threads: 2; OS Version: Mac OS X 10.11.6; UI Render: default; Locale: en-GB (fr.UTF-8)
