Why is the development of Libre Base nearly dead? It would be a useful program to make quick interfaces for scientific databases. Could there be a "donate to fix this bug" feature to speed up development.

Nonsense.

Moving from HSQLDB to Firebird is progressing. And GUI interaction between Base and Calc or Writer is getting minor adjustments--while retaining support for legacy HSQLDB until a full cut over.

So in short its coming. If you need something robust in the interim--work with an external RDBMS and appropriate connector.
