Previous versions of Writer displayed the selected color's name when a color was selected using the buttons on the Text Formatting (Text, Background, and Highlight colors) toolbar buttons(I am using the default standard color grid). Version 5 does not show color names despite color names being displayed in the /Tools/Options/LibreOffice/Colors menu. This lack of a previous feature forces the user to count down the column of color squares to positively identify a color, which is still difficult for users who are insensitive to some subtly different color pairs or whose monitors are not properly calibrated.
Can you give the LibreOffice version and distribution you're using, and check if OpenGL is enabled via menu Help -> About LibreOffice (what the string is after "UI Render:"). I tested in Ubuntu 16.04 with LibreOffice 5.1.4.2 and 5.2.0.4, and the tooltips for color names were visible in both.
LibreOffice 5.1.4.2 (Automatically installed with upgrade from Ubuntu 14 LTS to 16.04 LTS) "UI Render: default;" Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (In reply to Aron Budea from comment #1) > Can you give the LibreOffice version and distribution you're using, and > check if OpenGL is enabled via menu Help -> About LibreOffice (what the > string is after "UI Render:"). > > I tested in Ubuntu 16.04 with LibreOffice 5.1.4.2 and 5.2.0.4, and the > tooltips for color names were visible in both.

How about this: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile#Resolving_corruption_in_the_user_profile
Thank you, Buovjaga! The LibreOffice profile had been corrupted when it was copied into LibreOffice 5.1.4.2 when Ubuntu was upgraded to 16.0.4 LTS My first attempt at resetting the profile by deleting the registrymodifications.xcu file worked.
Nice to hear that it got solved (and sad that corruption happened)! I'll set the status to WFM as that is what we use for these cases.
