Description Nolan Leasy 2016-08-19 13:00:57 UTC
Unchecking the Status Bar view does cause the status bar to disappear in Calc, but a blank status bar *area* re-appears permanently when saving a document in Excel (xls) format. The status bar area appears briefly when saving a document in ODS and then disappears again.

This is limitation of .xlsx, .xls and MS Excel application.

MS Excel do not allow to hide status bar, and the status bar hide is not saved in .xlsx and .xls.

That doesn't make sense to me unless the code is actually calling a foreign module. Seems to me the behavior of the LibreOffice application should not be affected by the output that it produces, whether it be ODS, XLS or CSV.

After further testing, I've also found a variation of this issue when saving in generic CSV format. The difference in this case is that, not only does the status area re-appear upon saving the document, the full status information re-appears as well.

This issue is present in all versions of OpenOffice and LIbreOffice. The status area is opened temporarily for save progress even when saving native ODT format, but disappears in that case. Only when saving in non-ODT format does it remain on the screen. The user can re-hide the status area by checking and unchecking View->Status Bar again.

CASE 1: Save in ODT format. Progress bar appears for save progress and disappears, correctly honoring the view setting.

CASE 2: Save in MS XLS format. Progress bar appears for save progress and remains on screen without status data (empty progress area).

CASE 3: Save in generic CSV format. Progress bar appears for save progress, remains on screen and status data is included.

Many users need to maintain documents in MS format and this workaround is annoying for anyone who wants to maximize their spreadsheet view.

Test cases refined:

CASE 1: Save in ODT format. Progress bar appears for save progress and disappears, correctly honoring the view setting.

CASE 2: Save in MS XLS format. Progress bar appears for save progress and remains on screen without status data (empty progress area).

CASE 3: Save in generic CSV format (1st save). Progress bar appears for save progress and remains on screen without status data (empty progress area). Same result as CASE 2.

CASE 4: Save in generic CSV format (subsequent saves, after status bar re-hidden). Progress bar appears for save progress, remains on screen and status data is included.
