Description Walter 2016-11-03 17:56:22 UTC
Hi,

i would like to do Desktop publishing with LibreOffice Draw.
PDF product is visually correct, but when i send to the printers, it lacks differentes boxes : mediabox, trimbox, bleedbox and artbox.

Is it possible to have a layer to visualize the different boxes and tabs to define in the properties of the page.

With these improvements, it would be possible to produce a document ready for printing.

thank you for your work.

Draw has layers, with not the best usability. Therefore we made recently a proposal [1] how to improve, which could explain the current state too. What do you miss exactly? At best you can attach a document as example.

We try to make desktop publishing with free software. I tried to do with Scribus, Inkscape, LibreOffice Draw.
Scribus has the best PDF rendering,
Inkscape provides a good graphic quality,
LibreOffice Draw is the easiest to use for users who wish to make a publication, which should not necessarily be accurate design level, but the data, graphics are very important, especially the relationship with LibreOffice Calc for the preparation of charts.

I join 2 pdf file
one made with Scribus, they are all pdf Boxes.
Another file made with LibreOffice Draw they are only MediaBox.

Layer serve to visualize the location of different PDF boxes, it's just an idea for improvement.
It is true that the layers are not very intuitive, in Inkscape they are easier to apprehend.

I see the definition in the raw file but not rendered specially (white page).

/MediaBox [0 0 623.62205 870.23622]
/BleedBox [0.00000 0.00000 623.62205 870.23622]
/CropBox [0 0 623.62205 870.23622]
/TrimBox [14.17323 14.17323 609.44882 856.06299]
/ArtBox [14.17323 14.17323 609.44882 856.06299]

And I still don't understand why Draw's layers are not sufficient. But anyway, let's have the experts a look.

it's not about the draw layers, but rendering pdf, which does not define the different box.
A layer will visualize the boxes more easily.

Valid enhancement request. More info can be found here https://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/PDF_Boxes_:_mediabox,_cropbox,_bleedbox,_trimbox,_artbox

PDF specs are linked on this page

From the UI POV it makes sense to add these properties to the PDF options dialog as another tab. The remaining question is how to deal with PDF import.

(Moving from Draw to Filters & Storage)

Trim marks were requested in bug 103396 along with a workaround and a reference how Microsoft handles this feature.
