It's not a bug obviously but I don't think it's an enhancement too. It's a major change. Some people would consider it positive, others negative. As for me, I don't understand the interest of it but it's just my personal opinion.
TDF Board [1] has considered taking in the Thunderbird project, and there was some spirited discussion on User ML [2]. All of which might be interesting if Thunderbird were to find a new home and leave Mozilla. Otherwise, out of scope for the project.
