Description Jim Arner 2017-02-03 14:24:37 UTC
My system is Kubuntu 16.04 LTS, with KDE and xFce. This problem started about 10 days ago.

I've completely purged LO from my system, did a re-boot, installed LO 5.3 from new downloaded .debs -- still the same message when I attempt to start LO. Problem first occurred with LO 5.2 installed.

Error message:
~~~
The application cannot be started. [context="shared"] caught unexpected com.sun.star.ucb.InteractiveAugmentedIOException: a folder could not be created
~~~

The message suggests that there is a permissions issue, but not enough info in the error message to know what folder is involved.

I found a thread on ask.libreoffice.org that suggests the problem is missing font files. I don't think that is the issue as I have font folders present in usr/share/fonts.

It is likely that when you purged Libreoffice, you also removed some dependencies. When installing from .deb package files, this may have been left unresolved. Have you tried running `apt-get build-dep libreoffice`, and then running the application?

Thanks for the reply. When I run your suggestion, I get the message:
'Unable to find a source package for libreoffice',
same if I change to libreoffice-5-2 or libreoffice-5-3.

This problem began while using LO 5.2 which had been running just fine for several months. A friend told me that LO 5.3 was available so I installed that - same problem. I performed the purge so as to clear the system of all LO associated files (at least to the best of my knowledge).

I have just now used:
'sudo apt-get install libreoffice'
which appears to have re-installed LO 5.3

I still get the same error message when I attempt to start LO.

Solved.

Found information on askubuntu.com:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/561711/libre-office-will-not-open

I deleted the 'libreoffice' folder in .config - LO now starts, LO did re-create the libreoffice folder.

Thanks, let's close.

Btw. in 5.3 there is now Help - Restart in Safe Mode and also the command line launch parameter: --safe-mode
