I started my laptop after some time away.  The taskbar showed two instances of Calc and one instance of Writer already open.  I doubleclicked on the 3rd file I wanted to open and Calc/LibreOffice crashed, taking the other three instances with it.  (Nothing should be lost because I always save material before stopping work on it.)
-- Double-clicking afterwards brought up the 'attempt recovery' pop-up.
