Confirmed with as early as v4.2.0.4 / Windows 7. Seems like the bug arrived with the Sidebar.

Can't leave Fill Format Mode with Esc in Calc:

Version: 24.8.0.0.alpha0+ (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 2cedb1a19ad605df4e148589e9027512e4dd9265
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

Same in:

Version: 7.2.0.4 / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 9a9c6381e3f7a62afc1329bd359cc48accb6435b
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

@Seth: are you sure you tested Calc? I works as expected in Writer.

Can't remember, but just repro'ed with Calc using:

Version: 7.2.7.2 (x64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 8d71d29d553c0f7dcbfa38fbfda25ee34cce99a2
CPU threads: 8; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 19045; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win
Locale: da-DK (da_DK); UI: en-US
Calc: CL

And works as expected with Writer, as you noted.
