Description Regina Henschel 2017-04-10 19:00:40 UTC
Index: backgrounds;inserting from Gallery gives you the page
/text/shared/guide/gallery_insert.xhp
Title: Inserting Objects From the Gallery

That page needs an update. Gallery was integrated in the Sidebar long time ago and the symbol was removed from the default settings of the Standard toolbar.

The described way to link an image from the Gallery has been removed by purpose.

Insert as background of an object does not work as described.

The item Gallery has been moved from the menu Tools to the menu View.

Hi Regina, I was testing the instructions in the help page you mentioned and none of them work. I'll give more details for each section:

In "Inserting an object as a copy" it is possible to fix the instructions because inserting objects still works in all LO applications.

In "Inserting an object as a link" it looks like it is no longer possible to insert objects as links, so this section should be removed.

In "Inserting an object as a background graphic" the options "Insert - Background - Page or Paragraph" are only available in Writer. However, based on my testing they don't seem to be working.

In "Inserting an object as a texture (pattern) for another object" the instructions did not work at all. Has this feature been removed?

In short, it seems that from the 4 use cases, only the first still works. Could you confirm if this is indeed the case?

As for inserting objects as links I found this page saying that holding Ctrl + Shift and dragging the object into the document inserts it as a link (this worked in my tests):

Yes, that's why I have written the bugreport.

But the first kind of that page does not work. Simple dragging is not possible. You get always a "copy" (with "copy" I mean, that the mouse cursor gets a + ) when dragging without pressing any modifier key.

I guess commit 4e3f7d32b80fcb44f20abe634a2035d2c90c9e08 for bug 67274, so since LO 4.2.

I haven't been able to find a version that allows me to do that, at least on Linux. Has this ever worked?

It works in Apache OpenOffice 4.1., but it seems it was not implemented in LibreOffice. Neither version 3.5 nor 4.4 has it.

This is working for me in Writer in -
Version: 24.2.1.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community

Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US

- but only for some themes or possibly some types of object.

It looks like there are several help pages giving contradictory information about inserting objects from the Gallery. I'm going to try to merge or update them as appropriate.
