Description Rafael D. 2017-04-11 20:08:16 UTC
Description:
I just learned the hard way that one cannot save multiple worksheets inside a .csv file (unlike a spreadsheet). I lost several hours of work. I will never make this mistake again, but others might.

What fooled me was that I was able to save versions of the .csv file in different worksheets, so I thought I was backing up along the way. LibreOffice pleasantly allowed me to save the different worksheets, and displayed the worksheet tabs and names at the bottom the same as if it were a spreadsheet file. But when I closed and reopened the .csv file, all the worksheet tabs were gone, along with hours of work and my sanity.

So this is a feature request. To prevent others from repeating my mistake, perhaps have LO fail faster and more gracefully, such as refusing to save a separate worksheet and offering a warning. Thank you for your consideration.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a csv file
2. Create a new worksheet at the bottom, with a different name. Save. LO will display multiple worksheets at the bottom. Save.
3. Close the file.

Actual Results:
Upon reopening, only one worksheet is visible (probably the most recent one).

Expected Results:
IMPOSSIBLE: Multiple worksheets would still be visible. I understand this is impossible.

ALTERNATIVE SUGGESTION: Prompt, firm and efficient failure: Have LO refuse to allow creating/saving more than one worksheet, and offer a notice that csv files cannot have multiple worksheets.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
Perhaps some might call this a feature request rather than a bug. However, I just lost half a day of paintaking work (and some faith in LO), so the consequences are not trivial. Also, I was directed to submit feature requests here also.

Sorry, what did you with the advice box?

Thanks for the fast and helpful reply. That box is perfect! I don't believe it was ever presented to me, since the colors are also quite distinctive. If that's what people usually see, it's exactly right.

The question is if and when the box is presented. My workflow somehow routed me around that warning. Follow is what I did earlier, and I just replicated it:

*Exported a file form a website in csv to my local computer.
*Opened the file with LO Calc.
*Edited the file to create a new worksheet on the lower tab display.
*Closed the file and reopened, and saw the second tab was gone.

I did not do the following:
*Open a blank/new file with calc.
*Resave an .ods file as .csv.

Perhaps the beautiful box could be displayed in more cases? Thanks again for the quick and helpful response. Cheers.

Even if it's not a bug, can it be listed somewhere as a feature request? When I posted it elsewhere, they told me to post feature requests here.

For feature requests please select the keyword "enhancement" from the 'Severity' dropdown list.

But: Even if you did so, I would expect QA to classify it NOTABUG or WONTFIX - and they would be right.

A bug might be at the most
1) to overleap the warning prompt (if this actually occurs without consent)
2) to not also warn that only ONE SHEET can be exported to CSV at a time
3) to stress formats and content instead of functionality in the alert text.

If you didn't see the alert, you may wrongly have deactivated it (checkbox!). You can reinstate it under 'options'>'Load/Save'>'General'.

You are absolutely right. I had evidently previously disabled it. I thank you both for the fast and substantive replies. That more than restores my faith in LO.
