Not to sure when this started to happen. probably when I upgraded to 5.3.2. When I use ctrl+f to do a search in calc if fail to find what I want.

Works here. Any detailed example / document / step-by-step procedure to follow for how to reproduce your problem?

This happens with ods and cvs. Have not tested any formats. 

If I try ctrl+f then try in what, it does not find what I am looking for. It just says no match found. However, I have noticed if what I am looking for is from cell that is a formula it will not find it, but if it is just a value in the cell it will find it.

thanks for further details.
If you use Ctrl+H, then under Options you can choose if search must be in values, notes, or formulas.
There is an issue already for a setting to adapt this, if the user wishes:
Bug 102506 - Find Bar Ctrl+F (search of Cells in Calc): add Expert configuration option to set search for cell Values in stead of Formulas
