Description Jess Holle 2017-07-29 12:35:56 UTC
Description:
Ever since the first fresh 5.3.x release I tried, LibreOffice only shows black boxes rather than text throughout the UI. This applies to menu titles/items, buttons, Calc/Writer text entry, etc. It's as if the entire UI was redacted as top secret!

The only solution thus far is to go back to LibreOffice 5.2.x and stay there.

This is very frustrating given that 5.3.x and 5.4.x release keep happening and nothing gets done about this issue.

Steps to Reproduce:
Start a LibreOffice app

Actual Results:
Black boxes everywhere.

Expected Results:
A usable UI in a post-5.2.x version of LibreOffice!

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
This is with Windows 7 (Enterprise) on a Dell Precision M4700 laptop.

Please attach a screen clip, but suspect this is duplicate of bug 107166 and that you have buggy drivers for your GPU under Windows 7

Is your M4700 equiped with AMD or nVidia GPU?

Please attach result of DxDiag.exe System and Display panel.

I have attached the dxdiag output requested.

I'm not sure when I'll get to producing a screenshot -- as I've made numerous installations of 5.3.x and 5.4.x versions, only to find each one broken and having to reinstall the latest 5.2.x. I'd already re-installed 5.2.x and don't want to go through this yet again.

The effect is quite simple, though: a solid black (i.e. black-filled) bounding box around/over every piece of text in the UI.

Oddly playing around in the UI a while can sometimes make this go away on portions of the UI, but overall the result is unusable.

While Windows video drivers can be a pain, I would note that I have used this laptop with *many* pieces of software, including many versions of the somewhat notorious Java Plug-In, without having to use any special video acceleration disabling workarounds to get things displayed properly. LibreOffice would be the first piece of software I've used that had such an issue with this machine.

Well, I'll flat out say you need to update the Drivers for the GPUs.

Your Intel HD Graphics 4000 iGPU is at 8.15.10.2712 (2012-03-26), Dells support page delivers current Intel HD 4000 driver at 10.18.10.4425, while Intel latest is 15.33.45.4653 (2017-05-23)

A BIOS update looks to be appropriate as well, Dell shows the A17 (2017-05-23) as Urgent.

And since this laptop will have a discrete GPU (AMD or nVidia), I would update that driver bundle as well.

Make those changes and please let us know--for now leaving this NEEDINFO

Oh, and looking further down the dxdiag report, the discrete GPU on this laptop is the nVidia Quadro K2000M, same link for using a Dell "certified" driver 327.62 (2013-12-04). Or, probably more reliably from nVidia current is 385.08 (2017-7-28).
