Comment 3 Stuart Edwards 2017-08-30 12:30:27 UTC
I tried the suggested Menu/Help/Restart in safe mode and was able to reproduce the problem.

Interestingly Calc hangs while the file navigator/selection screen is open but only when I attempt to select 'Desktop'. The hang occurs before the Desktop file list is displayed. Images located in other directories are successfully selected and inserted as expected.

Attached is a sample from Activity Monitor if it's of any help.

No repro with

Version: 5.3.4.2
Build ID: f82d347ccc0be322489bf7da61d7e4ad13fe2ff3
Threads CPU : 4; Version de l'OS :Mac OS X 10.12.6; UI Render : par défaut; Moteur de mise en page : nouveau;
Locale : fr-FR (fr_FR.UTF-8); Calc: group

In both versions, I was inserting a PNG file from the Desktop folder via the Finder, using the Insert > Image menu in Calc.

@Stuart : If you are doing something different please report that here.
Comment 6 Alex Thurgood 2017-09-05 08:23:33 UTC
@Stuart : please specify the type of image file you are attempting to insert. If you can make the file available, we could test on other machines to see whether it is that particular file that is causing the problem.
Comment 7 Stuart Edwards 2017-09-05 13:18:33 UTC
The image type should not be a factor as the hang occurs when Desktop is specified as the source of the image (no image has been selected). The hang prevents the Desktop file list from displaying, leaving that portion of the window blank with a spinning ball in it. As indicated, this only happens when I try to select Desktop other directories work just fine (so now I learned not to use Desktop for this purpose...)

What option it's selected on Menu/Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General - Open/Save Dialogs.
Comment 9 Alex Thurgood 2017-09-05 13:41:08 UTC
@Stuart : have you got any network share aliases on your Desktop ?
Comment 10 Alex Thurgood 2017-09-05 13:49:25 UTC
OK, so something Stuart didn't mention in his original report was that he is using Mac OSX 10.10.5, but fortunately this information is visible in the Activity Monitor Report.

My guess is that this is yet another one of a few problems already known to affect LO usage on OSX 10.10.5 (and possibly older). It is unlikely that these will be corrected, unless by accident.
Comment 11 Stuart Edwards 2017-09-05 14:01:56 UTC
@ m.a.riosv : On my system (OSX) I have Menu/LibreOffice/LibreOffice/General where there is an Open/Save Dialogs option with an unchecked box for 'Use LibreOffice dialogs'

@ Alex : Yes I do - I run Parallels with Windows7 and there's alias for it on the desktop. Also an alias for a WD MyCloud drive that I just deleted since it wasn't working correctly. Remarkably that solved the problem and Insert now functions as expected when selecting an image from the Desktop.

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.
Comment 12 Alex Thurgood 2017-09-05 14:12:06 UTC
So, we've seemingly nailed down the problem - a redundant link to a non-available file resource causes the LO invocation of the Finder dialog to hang the whole LO process.

I believe that this is a duplicate of bug 41987, marking as such.

LO should be more resilient to redundant/unreachable file resource descriptors.
