Error on attempting to open this template right after creation

1. Open a new document

2. Massage it into a useful template

3. Menu -> File -> Templates -> Manage -> Save As Template... -> Save button -> enter template name in "enter template name" field -> ok

4. Close the file used to make the template, without saving as a document

5. Menu -> File -> Templates -> Manage: MyNewTemplate stands out as a dark gray image

6. double-click on the recently created MyNewTemplate to get an error pop-up:

Error creating new document:
home/.config/libreoffice/4/user/template/MyNewTemplate

7. Closed LOWriter and reoppened

8. Menu -> File -> Templates -> Manage -> double-click on the recently created MyNewTemplate: opens a new Untitled 2

Thank you for reporting the bug.
it seems you're using an old version of LibreOffice.
Could you please try to reproduce it with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ?
I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' if the bug is still present in the latest version.

1. Upgraded to LibreOffice 5.4.1.2

2. The previous bug preventing me from using a recently created template did not appear. That is, the newly created template opened as expected

3. A slight variation of bug 41650 reappeared
