5.1.6.2 is a very old and EOL build. Please test with current release.
Comment 2 raal 2018-02-12 18:25:25 UTC
No repro with 5.1.6.2 (from Ubuntu) and LO 6.1

Thanks for the replies.
I've been using Linux for 18 years but I am not a tech guy. If Ubuntu doesn't offer an upgrade to LibreOffice, quite honestly I don't know how to do it.
Comment 5 Xisco Faulí 2018-02-27 15:25:50 UTC
In order to get the latest version, you can follow this manual for instance: https://itsfoss.com/libreoffice-6-0-released/

I installed LibreOffice 6.0.1.2 and I have the same problem as I had with version 5.1.6.2

To be certain the reported issue is not
related to corruption in the user profile, could you please reset your
Libreoffice profile ( https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile ) and
re-test?

OK this is getting nuts. I followed all the directions at the links provided. The program does not re-write the user profile. The New>Labels works in safe mode. And now in regular mode it opens but I do not see my database there. I tried making a new database several times but it crashes when I try to query for data.
Luckily my spreadsheets are still accessible.

What do you mean it doesn't re-write it? The safe-mode uses a clean profile...
 The New>Labels
> works in safe mode.

Then it means the crash was due to a corrupted profile

And now in regular mode it opens but I do not see my
> database there.

That's why you're using a clean profile

I tried making a new database several times but it crashes
> when I try to query for data.
> Luckily my spreadsheets are still accessible.

Does it crash with one file or with any file? If it's only with one, could you please attach it ?

It's my understanding that once restarted in normal mode the "user" folder get re-written.

How can I make a new label if the fields in database are not accessible?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will attach one database.

New development: LibreOffice Writer will not open
LibreOffice Calc will open but crashes when I try to open a previous made Writer document.

I'm getting a "time out" in the forum here. Cannot send the database
Comment 12 Buovjaga 2018-03-11 12:09:38 UTC
Claude: doing only "Continue in safe mode" will not reset the profile and this is good, because there might be important things in the profile that need to be salvaged before destroying it.

However, if you reset the user profile, any changes you made to things like registered databases, customised menus & keyboard shortcuts, extensions installed will be deleted. A new clean user profile is generated when LibreOffice is launched.

You can re-register the database like so (copied from Help):

1. Choose Tools - Options - LibreOffice Base - Databases.
2. Click New and select the database file.

Let us know, how it went. I tried it with your file and New > Labels and it did not crash.

Comment 13 Claude Chmielewski 2018-03-15 19:20:52 UTC
I had version 6.0.2.1 installed. It looked like the Labels were going to work but my LibreOffice Writer had quit working completely. So I removed LibreOffice and installed Writer, Calc and Base. Trying to print labels from an old build it did not recognize my database. Made a new database with LibreOffice Base but when I tell Base to open it for editing, it crashes. If I go back to Base to open existing database it doesn't see it. Calc will open it but crashes when trying a query. Safe mode is the same. Writer does work now and I can see my spreadsheets with calc.
This is version 6.0.2.1. Should I close out this bug and start a new one?

Hmm, you are using a 32-bit Ubuntu. I wonder if you are hitting this bug 108619. Unfortunately it has still not been fixed in Linux Kernel: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1699772 (see latest comments).

What is your Ubuntu version? 14.04?
Comment 15 Claude Chmielewski 2018-03-15 19:35:27 UTC
16.04 LTS
Comment 16 Buovjaga 2018-03-15 19:48:38 UTC
Hmm, actually one of the recent comments in that Launchpad report is:
LibreOffice Base works fine on Xenial i386 with last test kernel:

~$ uname -a
Linux WS 4.4.0-112-generic #135~lp16909772Revert88a1685 SMP Tue Mar 6 08:40:12 UTC 2018 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like that change is yet in mainline Ubuntu.
Comment 17 Claude Chmielewski 2018-03-16 21:30:15 UTC
I'm about to dynamite the box. I need Libreoffice fully functional and it is not. Writer no longer works. This version is 6.0.1.2 and it says 3rd party. I had to perform miracles to remove it. I cannot install Apache Openoffice or LibreOpenOffice. I have to copy all my work to a Windows computer that I hardly use which is running Apache Openoffice. Incidentally Scribus doesn't work right on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I have Scribus installed on the Windows computer also. I wish some one had an answer to this nightmare.
Comment 18 Buovjaga 2018-03-17 06:46:52 UTC
Well, if your hardware allows it, you should try a 64-bit system. You could create a live USB of 64-bit Ubuntu (maybe version 17.10) and try LibreOffice in it.

Is there a tutorial on how to make a live Ubuntu USB?

OK that's working. But if I try to install 17.10 it will wipe my hard drive. Correct? Previous OS updates were no problem.

Yes. The recommended way to upgrade Ubuntu is to copy your important files (=your work) to some USB stick or hard drive, install the new version to your computer (wiping everything) and finally copy your important files back to the new system.

It is possible to upgrade Ubuntu "in place", but there is a danger of having a somehow broken system. It is true that some people do it this way.

In both cases you must have backups of your work (like you should have at all times anyway).

I did a backup of"/home" to a different HD. That should work right?

> I did a backup of"/home" to a different HD. That should work right?

Yep, that is the typical way.

One thing to note is that some applications store configuration data in the hidden .config directory inside home. So if there have been updates to the structure (names of paramters etc.) of the configuration files, you might have to compare a newer example file with your older one and update the older one. Maybe using a diffing utility - there exists online ones like http://www.quickdiff.com/

I was once locked out of a server because my SSH configs had some old crap that caused the SSH service to refuse to run after an update :) (thankfully the server had a rescue feature)

Backup said it could not open these files. I this significant?

/home/claude/.cache/dconf
/home/claude/.config/enchant
/home/claude/.dbus
/home/claude/.gvfs

Cached stuff is just cached, so nothing to worry about.
Enchant is a "Wrapper for various spell checker engines" https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/enchant
Dbus is a message bus system https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/dbus/
GVfs is GNOME's virtual filesystem https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GVfs

I doubt that you have many any manual tweaks to those, so just ignore them.
