Description rayisfun 2018-04-20 20:37:08 UTC
The double line spacing in an .ODT document I have been working on in LibreOffice for over a year has altered since updating to v5.4.6.2. The document has reduced from 456 to 362 pages due to the double line spacing shrinking in size. There are now 28 lines per page instead of the normal 22 lines. When I open the document, the information bar reads 456 pages initially but after a few seconds the page number drops to 362. The number of words and characters has not changed. The document font is Courier Prime 12. When I open a new document in LibreOffice the double line spacing appears correct. I have asked for help on the community forum but the one reply I received did not solve the problem.
After installing the v5.4.6.2 update it requested that I reboot my Windows 10 x86 laptop. I have not had to reboot after a LibreOffice update before. The problem with the line spacing occurred after this update. The document opens correctly in Apache OpenOffice v4.1.5 and MS Word 2016.
To try to solve The problem I highlighted all the document text in LibreOffice and reset the line spacing to "double" in Format - Paragraph - Line Spacing but this did not rectify the problem. I uninstalled v5.4.6.2 and deleted any LibreOffice folders in Program Files and AppData/Roaming. I then reinstalled the previous version of LibreOffice but this did not solve the problem. I saved the document as a .docx in MS Word 2016 and then opened it in LibreOffice but the problem persisted. I saved the document as .ODT in Apache OpenOffice but when I opened it in LibreOffice the same problem occurred. I tried copying and pasting the text into a new LibreOffice document but that didn't solve the problem. I'm using a fresh copy of the document from an external source each time I try a new fix. I'm unable to upload this document.

Font handling (was reworked 5.3 with tweaks through 5.4) so what LibreOffice build was it last correct. Font details and metrics for your "Courier Prime 12" font?

Looking at the 1.203 build of the font shows it is OTF Version 3, so would not use the OTF recommended Typo metrics that a Version 4 font would, and so uses the Win Ascent/Descent metrics.

Then, depending on the metrics of the font, the LibreOffice "Double" line spacing applies 200% of the calculated fontheight+leading.

As a work around, you can switch line spacing to "proportional" and adjust up or down from 200% to get your document back to your expected page count. Also, be sure your paragraph spacings (Format -> Paragraph: Spacing above, Spacing below and the "Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style") are set as you'd prefer.

Possible alternative is to find an OTF version 4 font and work with that.

Thanks for your help. I tried your suggestion of proportional spacing but at 200% the spacing remains unaltered. A lower percentage reduces the spacing. I found a fix by changing the line spacing to "Leading" at 0.70cm. The document reverts back to 456 pages as normal.

I have used LibreOffice for many years. This document was created in it and for over a year, up until v5.4.4, worked perfectly. A friend, who is helping me with this document, is also unclear why this problem began after the v5.4.6.2 update. If, as you say, the font is at fault then why did this problem not occur with v5.4.4? I don't understand why this document loads correctly with 456 pages and then a couple of seconds later shrinks down to 362 pages. For some reason LibreOffice is re-formatting the document after it has loaded correctly.

Sadly, I have now uninstalled LibreOffice because I can't rely on it to work reliably. I'm now using Apache OpenOffice which opens my document correctly. I'll try another version of LibreOffice sometime in the future if/when this bug is fixed.

OK, good luck then. We'll be here...
