I have two picklist suggestions for the Start Center.

The goal is to keep the Start Center picklist clean, while preserving entries for important files.

1. Add a way to PIN entries on the Start Center

If a user opens many files of varies types, the Start Center quickly gets polluted with files that are viewed infrequently or never again. This requires the user to manually review the Start Page picklist and delete the many files that they do not need in the list.

The current option is to increase the PickListSize to a large number (i.e. 50, 100). This reduces the chances of losing documents from the picklist that are needed, but that's a lot of images to review on a regular basis just to make sure the picklist stays clean.

Suggestions:

1.1 Currently when the cursor hovers over a picklist thumbnail, there is a delete button. Add a pin button.

A pinned entry in the picklist would have to be unpinned before it could be deleted. Clear List would have no affect on pinned entries.

2. On the Start page, add an option to change the number of recently used files (PickListSize).

Suggestions:

2.1. A spin button in the lower left-hand corner.
2.2. A label and pop-up to the Sidebar Recent Files drop-down

Any option that directly impacts the list should be easily accessible from the Start Center (i.e., RecentDocsThumbnail).

3. Currently when you hover over a picklist thumbnail, the file path is displayed. Add a copy button to copy the path to the clipboard.

The Picklist <=> Recent-Documents-List <=> Thumbnail views on the start center.

What affects one, affects all. Rendering the Thumbnail views can be suppressed, but a generic MIME icon will be substituted. Also, the MRU rendeered to StartCenter can be controlled directly--deletion of the thumbnail, or manipulating the File -> Recent Documents list.

Default MRU picklist is 25, meaning by default just 25 thumbnails appear on the StartCenter. Only when the MRU count is increased does it make sense to be able to filter the thumbnails on the StartCenter.

Rework and management of the MRU list is the gist of work to be done on bug 61174, complete things there and the GUI issues here will resolve.

With Bug 61174, it sounds like the Start Center will see some changes that will
keep the picklist clean and improve its' efficiency.

To summarize enhancements mentioned in this bug enhancement:

1. pin document
2. Start Center options easily accessible, perhaps on the Start Center itself
3. copy path to clipboard.

I was aware that the thumbnail could be a generic thumbnail that just represents file type. I would be just as happy with a list that contains only file names.

I have the PickListSize set to 100. That is a lot of thumbnails and scrolling does flicker, but it is more important that I don't lose documents from the list. As far as filtering, I'd rather be able to position documents in the list and keep the important ones (pinned) in a static order that I order. I'm more concerned about document importance and name, than document type. Sometimes I open a file just so it gets positioned at the top of the list again.

Would it make sense to have two lists, maybe, pinned and recently used?

Should this bug enhancement be closed or incorporated into 61174?
