Description: hi, I just realized that I never use Forms and Tables, and I think it would be great if they could be dropped from the menu by some customization... I think it makes a much grater difference if you only have to look over 9 menu items and not 11 ... not to mention if there were only 8 ! :) cause clearly, "Styles" is not necessary even when you work with styles continuously... as a result, it would be much more compact, much fresher, much more intuitive... people who use Writer for writing and not for office work, would very probably appreciate it.. I certainly would! :) Steps to Reproduce: 1. open LO Writer... 2. try to find something in the menu .. like footnotes 3. Actual Results: you have to go through 11 menus... dropping down each of them (virtually) Expected Results: you would have to go through only 8 of them... Reproducible: Always User Profile Reset: No Additional Info:
IMHO -> WONTFIX, because then user can delete all main menu UX team, what do you think?
The generating xml-file is \user\config\soffice.cfg\modules\swriter\menubar\menubar.xml for Writer, for example. It is editable, no UI needed. But that should only be done by experts. I agree with kompilainenn -> WONTFIX. An access via UI is too dangerous for ordinary users.
Every user can configure the menu easily via Tools > Customize; it's one click to remove Forms. The introduction of Styles got a lot of positive feedback and maybe Forms will be your next best friend. The actual issue is to quickly find a menu item. And there are proposals like in bug 91874. Many thanks for reporting anyway.
(In reply to Heiko Tietze from comment #3) > Every user can configure the menu easily via Tools > Customize; it's one > click to remove Forms. I find no option in Tools > Customize to remove an entire menu. The options contain only "Add" and "Move". However that be, WONTFIX is OK.

PS: perhaps two flavors of Writer could be available then ... one for writing.. one for office businesses :) I understand, Heiko, that you got a lot of positive feedback from users after introducing Styles... but numbers can sometimes be misleading... some type of users make a small group.. thousands only... while another types might be in the 100 000s... so, if that type is affected, you'll get more positive fb than when another type... so, I think it is not the number that matters but the intuitive usability of the application... If I could, I would turn it off, because I got used to manage styles in the old way.. which is PRETTY INTUITIVE, including a WYSIWYG display of the style!!! BUT Styles do make sense in terms of writing anyway :) :) NO DOUBT :) AN ALTERNATIVE perhaps: how about using colors to group menus? or no grouping.. sorry.. just to give a color individually to menu titles? than people could articulate the visual appearance of the BIG menu.. to make the use of Writer (even) more intuitive ... OR / AND: using separators could be a great thing, too.. that would be grouping, that is: a great help :) I still hope that the quick overviewing of a menu (of 11) can be made easier in some way... thanks for Writer!
You are right, the default menu entries are blocked; you can only delete menus that you added yourself (the +/- buttons right of the dropdown). But Regina's tip in comment 2 works. Having alternative menus where you easily switch from menu structure A to B, ideally also with extensions, likewise the icon theme is a nice-to-have. And probably there is an open request somewhere. But we have Notebookbars for the different use scenarios including a variant without the main menu.
