This is an enhancement request for UX. Rationale: When inserting the same field in many places in a text document, one has to open the Insert Field dialog either from the menu or in the main toolbar. I'd like to propose a sub menu in the Fields menu or Fields Icon to list the 5 recently used fields, in a similar way as the "recent documents" in the File menu. Example of use case: Suppose we have a field which is a reference that contains the Company name. The same field must be inserted in several pages. Current process: go to the places where the company name is to be inserted, choose menu Insert - Fields - More Fields and get the right tab (references), choose the field and press Insert button. Repeat for the next occurence of the Company name. Suggested process: go to the places where the company name is to be inserted, Choose menu Insert - Fields - More fields - then a list of the last 5 fields inserted with their format is available in the menu. Pick one of them. Complementary: Add a "Copy to clipboard" button to copy the reference field with format to clipboard and let user paste in every place needed in the document.
(In reply to Olivier Hallot from comment #0) > Current process: go to the places where the company name is to be inserted, > choose menu Insert - Fields - More Fields... You can copy/paste fields. And the Insert Field dialog is amodal so you can keep it open while editing the document. > I'd like to propose a sub menu in the Fields menu or Fields Icon to list the > 5 recently used fields, in a similar way as the "recent documents" in the > File menu. Makes sense, though we have means to deal with the situation. Opinions?
Heiko is right, the dialog window is modal. Does this help? The suggestion to use copy/paste only works if the user doesn't copy another content between field inserted actions. So the usefulness is limited. I love the idea of a 'last used field' item in the fields sub-menu. For me a single item is enough, which could be introduced as new UNO command to that the user can assign a shortcut key or an icon via Customize dialog. With that the user has not to go through the menu.
Copy/paste works, the dialog is amodal, and there hasnt been an objection to WFM. So lets close it.
