I can not confirm with Version: 6.2.0.0.alpha0+
Build ID: 433fce6571d4b9121374047324a7d2d2722ac3e4
CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 4.4; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;

I'm on Ubuntu 18.04 and with version
Version: 6.0.7.0.0+
Build ID: 3e7dea0348149ae43e5142d5820b094643f39178
CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 4.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk2;
En for the language.

Working as expected here also.

It turns out LO opens this menu after like 5 minutes, so the freeze is not complete.

Well, it still freezes:

Version: 6.1.2.1
Build ID: 6.1.2-1
CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 4.18; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-US (en_US); Calc: group threaded

And it freezes even in safe mode.

Maybe related to bug 118761 which had the same root cause as bug 109158.
zak: can you tell us about the specs of your computer? What is the CPU?

Your computer specs are fine and don't explain a 5 minute freeze. Clean install means you do not have a long custom autocorrect list so it can't be that either. I'm out of ideas. Getting a callgrind trace might be enlightening, but unfortunately Arch Linux still does not ship debug packages (I hear they are nearly ready, though).

Hello zak,
Could you please try to reproduce it with the latest version of LibreOffice
from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ?
I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to
'UNCONFIRMED' if the bug is still present in the latest version.

Turning off these settings solved the problem:

Use hardware acceleration
Directly accesses hardware features of the graphical display adapter to improve the screen display. The support for hardware acceleration is not available for all operating systems and platform distributions of LibreOffice.

Use Anti-Aliasing
When supported, you can enable and disable anti-aliasing of graphics. With anti-aliasing enabled, the display of most graphical objects looks smoother and with less artifacts.
