Description: This is a request for an improvement. I got the bug report page after pressing on the link for request. I am not a techie. I don't use the database often and one of the reasons why is that everytime I do use it, it tells me that it needs a jre runtime environment. Each time this happens I go through the process of finding the libreoffice instructions, which are not that clear, but somehow I do get the jre activated and attached to the database. But the next time I go to use the database, the same thing happens. I can't stand it anymore. I love iibreoffice and have no problem with any other component of the package. Please, for the same of not-tech people like me, on just this one component since it doesn't operate without the jre, make it an automatic update and install. I can design and manage a database - it's the back end that I can;t handle. I would be extremely grateful if you would undertake this to the extent that I would make a donation toward it. Actual Results: Actual results are listed in the description Expected Results: Depending upon how frustrated I feel I just close up BASE Reproducible: Always User Profile Reset: No Additional Info: Notice that jre is needed or not up to date. Would you like to install/update jre? Y N Assuming Y Notiication: . . . importing latest jre . . . installing latest jre . . . installation complete . . . connecting jre to LibreOffice Base. . . . Update completed. Enjoy!
@bdj: including the JRE by default is unlikely to happen, if only due to the increased size of the downloadable bundle. Even offering to download it after a check is problematic because Oracle is moving to a commercial licence for its own JRE, and the "free" community JRE/JDK requires the user to install it themselves (from a non-obvious website). How is the system to know which version of the JDK/JRE the user would like, especially if there is a commercial version already installed ? Furthermore, there is a trend to reducing reliance on Java within LibreOffice, hence the migration to Firebird (in progress) as the default embedded db engine for the future. Java VM will then only be needed for those people requiring reports, and backend connectivity via JDBC drivers to other Java-based db engines (and for legacy support of embedded hsqldb of course). Legacy support for old ODB files will probably not continue for ever. All of the above tend to lean against any automatic inclusion of a Java VM in the LibreOffice download. BTW, you don't mention which OS you are running LibreOffice on, please provide that information.
Have you tried installing a JDK as well, instead of just a JRE, and pointing your LO installation to that in the LO preferences (Tools > Options for Win/Lin, LibreOffice>Preferences for Mac) ?
