Content from spread sheet cells can be used for diagrams. I would find it helpful to support data processing for diagram display also without manually copying content from external data sources to these cells. I would prefer to work with values from specific databases directly. Would you like to choose from the following items? * Database table * Database view * Customised SQL query
It is already possible: https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/33047/is-it-possible-to-create-a-chart-based-on-data-taken-directly-from-base/ Is there anything that is actually missing?
(In reply to Buovjaga from comment #1) > https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/33047/is-it-possible-to-create-a- chart-based-on-data-taken-directly-from-base/ The mentioned answer points the possibility out to import (and copy) information into an other application before the desired data can be used, doesn't it? > Is there anything that is actually missing? Yes. - Can direct data exchange become more convenient for better database usage?
@Markus: there is already bug 108913 - is that what you are looking for ?
(In reply to Alex Thurgood from comment #3) > @Markus: there is already bug 108913 - is that what you are looking for ? No. - The issue “Charts/Diagrams in Calc as an own table/tab” affects an other user interface area.
@Markus : as for supporting from within Calc access to a query or a table, this is already present : Menu Data > Dynamic Table (Data pilot) > Selection: registered datasource Select your registered database Choose your Table/Query/SQL (LO parser)/Native SQL Choose your datasource
Or alternatively, create a Report from within an ODB file, design a chart to insert in your report and save as spreadsheet ?
(In reply to comment #5) > Menu Data > Dynamic Table (Data pilot) > Selection: registered datasource > Select your registered database > Choose your Table/Query/SQL (LO parser)/Native SQL > Choose your datasource I imagine that such data source configuration can become more convenient for usage with charts. (In reply to comment #6) > Or alternatively, create a Report from within an ODB file, design a chart to > insert in your report and save as spreadsheet ? Related software improvements can be also interesting.
Markus: when replying, please describe in much more detail what you want to achieve. Preferably with a sketched image or images of how you envision the process to look like. This makes it easier for Calc/Base gurus to respond.
(In reply to Buovjaga from comment #8) I suggest to improve the support for data selection by charts a bit more. A diagram can present information from databases or spread sheet cells, can't it? This input configuration will influence system preferences in corresponding dialogues and context menus.

All right, but please describe how this should happen exactly. It's not useful to say "I want this area to be improved, but have no idea how".
(In reply to Buovjaga from comment #10) A chart needs information about data rows. How would you like to choose if the required input and settings are provided by a database or spread sheet cells (of a document)?

Please just describe 1) what is lacking in Alex's proposal in comment 5 2) what you would do to change things for the better
(In reply to Buovjaga from comment #12) I suggest to take another look at the specification of data ranges. https://help.libreoffice.org/6.3/en-US/text/schart/01/wiz_data_range.html How do you think about to refer to database items there instead of spread sheet cells (of a document)?

Ok, I guess this is as far as we can pry open this cryptic clamshell of a topic. Let's ask design team, if they have any bold visions regarding this or if they will just throw it in the trashbin.
AFAIU, the request is like in bug 122011 where Markus wants to access external datasources directly in the chart creation wizard respectively data range of the chart without adding it to the spreadsheet.
*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 122011 ***
This is not a duplicate. It would need a completely new implementation to support Base queries.
So not much to add from the UX POV.
(In reply to Heiko Tietze from comment #18) I guess that your feedback can become more helpful if the user interface will be clarified for the input of database query parameters according to the proposed data processing functionality.
