Description: Per https://help.libreoffice.org/Impress/Adding_a_Header_or_a_Footer_to_All_Slides this must an easy task. But the manual doesn't work as it should. The page number checkbox is enabled by default (not cleared as manual in "Adding predefined header or footer objects" section says). But the page number is still not visible, even if the checkbox is checked. I tried to uncheck it and check it back without any success at all. This applies only to pptx/potx templates (finally saved as odp file). It seems default odp templates from basic LibreOffice set are working fine. I haven't tried any <2003 ppt/pps templates though. Steps to Reproduce: As stated in the description Actual Results: There is no way to show page numbers in the footer of all slides. I can only add page number field directly to the master of each slide type, but not to the footer. Expected Results: This should just work Reproducible: Always User Profile Reset: No Additional Info:
Please explain "pptx/potx templates (finally saved as odp file)": are you referring to external MSO pptx/potx templates? where are they saved as ODP? please attach example pptx/potx from MSO.

I'm facing the same problem starting from scratch - all the way back to at least LO 3.5. For me, it has nothing to do with any file format. Steps to reproduce 1.) Create a new impress presentation. Just escape to ignore any templates. 2.) Switch to View - Slide Master. Notice that there is a Number box at the bottom that appears to be visible. Go ahead and add some text in there. 3.) Verify that the page number element is enabled. Slide Menu - Master Elements - Slide number is enabled (which as OP indicates the documentation says it is supposed to be disabled by default.) 4.) Switch back to view - Slide. Notice that there is no page number, nor the text that you added. Am I missing something here? I remember struggling with this a few years ago and probably I just gave up. I tried saving and reloading as ODP, but that didn't magically fix anything.
Never mind. The key is that the footer needs to be "inserted" into the slide. Well, yes, it already is inserted, but that is where the controls are to define the date, footer text, and where slide number is currently disabled. The documentation around View - Master Elements definitely OUGHT to mention the connection with Insert menu - Header and Footer.
I think the header controls should be available as a page on the slide properties. It probably is an easy thing to do for a UI guy.
Olivier Hallot committed a patch related to this issue. It has been pushed to "master": https://git.libreoffice.org/help/commit/d36d5b43e7274f678ce5fad89b42495fa6aed7e7 tdf#122148 Clarify master slide objects visibility
