Description: In Writer, when View > Zoom is at 100%, a page on 8.5x11" paper should be displayed at 8.5x11". It actually displays at 7.75" wide (ignoring margins and counting the paper as cut edge-to-edge). At least for width, View > Zoom is effectively at 91%. I'd like the display to correspond to the menu setting. My Dell Latitude laptop's display being at 1440x900 (the max) or at 1280x800, both having the same aspect ratio of 16:10, makes no difference. They both yield 91%. The window's lower right says "100%" and the slider is centered and appears to correspond to 100%. Moving the slider to "110%", effectively the inverse, is a kludge but not intuitive. I'm running Fedora 29 Linux kept manually evergreen. LO version is 6.1.5.2 and Build ID is 6.1.5.2-2.fc29. I don't know if this is the earlist version affected; it's probably not. Same behavior with Windows builds. But, this is not a bug in any sense! The 100% is the view of the document canvas--not 100% of actual size! You'll notice if you have the rulers enabled (horizontal & vertical) that the document page is sized as indicated. US letter default is 8.5 x 11 in. If it did not print or export at that size _that_ would be an issue. Frames of a program not displaying to monitor graphics at 100% of output size is the norm.
That makes sense, and I haven't seen a problem with the printouts and the horizontal ruler (my setup has no vertical ruler) seems to have the same effect as the canvas. However, LO is for use by people of whom many are not computer geeks and who therefore would expect something akin to real-life experience. They won't look in help, because they expect a computer to just work. The other zoom settings can be unrealistic as long as they're approximate and proportionate. But, to a lay person, 100% has to mean 100%. I'll set the status to reopen, but if this reason (common user expectation) is not good enough, then set it back and I'll leave it.
Adding UX team to decide
The real size depends on the screen and the resolution. A typical screen with 27" and 1920px resolution horizontally has a real resolution of ~71 dpi while the display manager takes the default of 96dpi. This difference makes objects larger or smaller in case of high-res displays and you have to scale appropriately. Do users expect those advanced DTP functionality from an office suite? Likely not. The issue is valid for all applications and I don't know any tool that covers for the difference. => NAB
