Created attachment 151859 [details] .odt file demonstrating the behaviour I am using Linux Ubuntu 19.04 and LO 6.2.4.2 I want to create chapter numbers in the following format: <Number>. <Heading on heading level 1> <number>.<number>. <Heading on heading level 2> <number>.<number>.<number>. <Heading on heading level 3> <number>.<number>.<number>.<number>. <Heading on heading level 4>, but LO Writer creates two (!) dots numbers in these lines after nearly each <number>, f.e. like this: <number>..<number>..<number>..<number>. <Heading on heading level 4> I have used the configuration possibilities in menu Tools > Chapter Numbering. For a demonstration refer to the attached .odt file. I have also attached a screenshot of the attached .odt file for persons not running a Linux distribution.

You have set chapter numbering to have "1st, 2nd, 3rd, ..." type; change it to "1, 2, 3, ...", and put a single dot to "After". See https://imgur.com/G5stGpk.

Thanks, that works, but your resolution is a workaround, and this workaround is not documented in the LO Help system, so at least this workaround should get documented there. And let me please add that if LO Writer is set to German, then the user explicitly has the choice to set the chapter numbering to "1. , 2. , 3." (which corresponds to the configuration method "1st, 2nd, 3rd" in the English version of LO Writer) - i.e. the single (!) dot between the numbers is explicitly mentioned in the "1. , 2. , 3." configuration method (see attached 2nd screenshot). So at least for a user who runs LO Writer in German it appears as a bug that he/she can define a chapter numbering method which implies that the numbering should look like "1.2.3. <chapter title>", while in fact this method results in "1..2..3. <chapter title>", if he/she does not know about your workaround. Otherwise the user is confused. Can we assign this bug issue to the documentation team?

1. Please don't confirm your own bug, that is done by others. 2. What I described is not a workaround, but the proper and intended way to do that. 3. The item that you used is a new item since 6.1 [1], which is localized abbreviated ordinals (as you see on English UI). It is not intended for what you used it. Its similarity to your intention is language-specific. 4. If you think that there's a help shortcoming, please file a separate bug, because this bug, as it is filed, is notabug, and trying to convert it to a different thing would only create confusion. (In reply to Jens Radloff from comment #3) > Thanks, that works, but your resolution is a workaround, and this workaround > is not documented in the LO Help system, so at least this workaround should > get documented there. Looking at the help system for current version [1], I see that exactly the solution I described *is* in fact documented (see descriptions of different numbering types, and also description of field "Separator After", which explicitly mentions the dot); instead, it's *your* way that lacks documentation. So - again: you are welcome to file a bug report about improvement of the help topic. Thanks. [1] https://help.libreoffice.org/6.2/en-US/text/swriter/01/06060100.html
