Feature already exists.

Enter a text box.

Apply a transition.

Context menu for the transition -> 'Effect options'

In that dialog's 'Effect' tab use the 'Text animation' drop down to select 'Word by word', or 'Letter by letter'. Default otherwise is the 'All at once'.

You fooled me by writing "transition" when you meant "animation".

Feature now working as described, but maximum delay between characters too short when only a few words. The "10,000%" setting is fine for a page of text, but I need at least 2 or 3 times this delay to get the effect I want when only three or four words.

What is the value a % of? It would be good to be able to set an absolute time in millisecs.

Why is there no reference to this feature in Help? Putting "text animation" in the search box gives no results.

Regards,

Jim

Yes, not clear about that--it is not a percentage, and not an absolute timing either.

But Text Annimation 'letter by letter' seems mostly correct (but really only relevant with the Basic -> Appear animation). I'm not sure the 'word by word' is doing reasonable things in response to 'delay between characters'--will poke around the source code for that and file issue if needed.

Documentation will always lag, the Effects options dialog is described in the latest Impress guide (https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/a/ae/IG42-ImpressGuide.pdf ), chpt 5, pg 137; and also in chpt 9, pg 223

Your most welcome to join the effort :-)

I have been experimenting further with text animation. I have got a good result using "Fade in" and Duration = 2sec, Character delay = 20%.

I have the .odp file saved on my laptop - how can I send it to you?

This feature seems to be very flaky; doesn't always work and the timings are critical, only works with some combinations (haven't the time to try every option!)

Occasionally I have got it to work with "Appear" by selection another option so that the Duration box is live and then going back to Appear, but very hit and miss.

Hope these comments help. I maybe very good at finding problems, but, as I am not a programmer, no use for finding the solutions.

If nothing proprietary, just attach it to this bug with the "Add an attachment", or you can sanitize it [1].

Hmm, interesting. If I change the animation for the text box from 'Fade in' to 'Appear' the delay between characters is converted from 20% to 10,000%--something needs a tweak.
