Description gtb11402 2019-11-15 12:13:42 UTC
Description:
We work exclusively on LibreOffice, but our partners regularly send us xlsx-files for co-working. From time to time we receive files that are displayed correctly in LO, but after saving in xlsx-format (and restarting LibreOffice) they are overlaid by many white boxes. These boxes are then also visible again in Excel.

We have now analyzed a file with Excel 2010 in more detail and found that the problems are caused by a special form of comment. These comments behave in Excel like text boxes (e.g. are transparent and rotatable). Before saving there are about 80 drawing elements with the name "_x000_t202" and about 30 with the name "AutoShape (and a number between 20 and 29)“ in LibreOffice-Navigator. After saving in LO all elements are called "custom shapes" and the "AutoShape" elements seem to be these white boxes, which could also be deleted.

We were able to reproduce the problem under Windows and Linux and analyzed it for the first time with LibreOffice 6.1.5.2. However, we had the same behavior with version 6.4 Alpha1. Similar descriptions exist on the Internet, but so far without a bug report (https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/19176/infinite-white-boxes/, https://ask.libreoffice.org/de/question/204672/wie-kriege-ich-dieses-weisse-blatt-wieder-weg/, https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/76644/white-box-covering-all-my-excel-worksheet/).

We have reduced a file to the relevant behavior and can make it available next to two screenshots!

Steps to Reproduce:
1. opening the xlsx-file
2. save the file as xlsx again
3. restart LibreOffice and load the saved file

Actual Results:
white boxes appear

Expected Results:
no white boxes and no illegal drawing elements in the LibreOffice-Navigator

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Looking through the navigator, there are a lot of drawing objects, many of the seems duplicated.

This is the same problem as bug #117274 which got fixed recently.

Could you try it again with an Excel-made xlsx file that was not yet modified in any LO version before 6.4 alpha?

You should not be able to see such empty drawing objects if you (1) save the Excel-made file in Calc (2) then again in Excel and then (3) reopen it in Calc.

In case you still experience it please upload an originally Excel-made file.

@gtb11402@eveav.com : please do as required, to test Excel-only modified file and attach original here.
I see that attachment 155840 [details] was last saved in MSO, and it still shows problem, but you didn't say if it was previously saved also in LO.

Unfortunately we don't have a Microsoft Office, so we had to test it externally - that's why there are delays. The sample Excel file was not processed with LibreOffice on our part, but we received it from our partners and cannot vouch for the previous steps.
However, the file was opened and saved again in LibreOffice 6.4 Beta 1. The error will then still occur in both LibreOffice and Excel.

I'll mark duplicate. Meaning that bug shouldn't appear with 6.4 and later.
But file still must be fixed manually, as explained there.
