Description bjwest 2020-03-13 01:47:11 UTC
Description:
When LibreOffice (any component) is opened when the program was forced close due to reboot, or, presumably, any other method, the Document Recovery window opens behind all other open windows without any indication on the taskbar. The only way to get to the window is by minimizing other open windows.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Reboot with LibreOffice file or files open.
2. After reboot, open any LibreOffice file with at least one window open covering a good portion of the desktop.

Actual Results:
Nothing appears to happen.. No file opens, no dialogs/windows what so ever anywhere to be seen. Nothing in System Tray to indicate there's a hidden window of any kind.

Expected Results:
Recover File dialog should appear in foreground, above all other open windows.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

I tested in Windows but couldn't reproduce.
Even if other file is open, recovery comes first.
I guess, unless clicked around - which would be WontFix.
Please explain and test again.

I have a couple of spreadsheets I keep open most of the time, minimized to the taskbar with any changes made saved before minimizing. I only reboot when a system update requires it, otherwise my computer is running or in hibernation. When a system update requires a reboot I just reboot, saving any data beforehand but without closing any windows. Upon reboot most applications restart and open their windows to the state they were prior. LibreOffice, however, does not start automatically (not an issue) and when I open one of the previously opened files, without any notification at all, the recover file dialog opens behind all other application windows. There is no indication on the taskbar that LibreOffice has window or dialog open and the only way to get to that window is to minimize the others. I haven't tried to cycle through or show all windows, but that shouldn't matter, LibreOffice should, at the very least, show in the taskbar when there is a dialog open or, preferably, open it's dialog in the foreground of all windows.

This has been "tested" every time I reboot my computer for several months now, though multiple LibreOffice versions.

Is this issue still reproducible with the latest version of LibreOffice from
https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ?
I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to
'UNCONFIRMED' if the bug is still present in the latest version.

Just updated to 6.4.5 and the dialog opens in front of other windows when I kill LibreOffice and reopen a document. It also now seems LibreOffice does restart on boot when a document was open on shutdown but the dialog is still behind all other windows. I'm assuming windows open in front of each other as their process is started, and the dialog showing up on the task manager may be a KDE issue not LibreOffce. Then again it is a dialog, so not showing up on the task manager is normal. I've tried to get the dialog to remain in front with the 'Special Window Settings' but so far haven't had much luck.

With LibreOffice opening when the window manager starts now I have no way to test if the dialog will be in front of or behind other windows when I try to open a document right after restarting, I can only assume with it opening on top when killed and restarted that it will (or would've) open on top.

Unless there's some way you can mark the dialog to be always on top no matter what or get it to show on the task manager there may be nothing further that can be done here.

A new major release of LibreOffice is available since this bug was reported.
Could you please try to reproduce it with the latest version of LibreOffice
from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ?

I'll update the info when the Ubuntu ppa is updated to 7.1 and can install with my package manager.

Since updating to 7.1.1.2 a few days ago, I haven't noticed this problem. I have noticed that the recovery dialog doesn't show in the task manager so if it is ever behind another window, there will be no indication of its existence. With or without this bug, the dialog should appear on the task manager.

This exists in :
Version: 7.3.1.3
Build ID: 30(Build:3)
CPU threads: 20; OS: Linux 5.16; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

While the recovery window is hidden, trying to start LO; the only clue to an issue is possibly a dbus error message. I do see the splash for a very brief moment, then exit.

However, when LO is in this state, every attempt to start oo{calc, writer, draw, etc} queues a start request. Once the hidden window is discovered and handled, LO opens as requested; PLUS a window for every attempt that did not start due to this issue.

System shutdown for an unknown reason overnight and now oocalc simply exits without segfault. The only way to get office to start is via this command:

  soffice -env:UserInstallation=file:///tmp/test

not via: oocalc, oowriter, etc...

OK... finally found the Document Recovery buried under several windows.
"Trivial"; but a PITA.

Still present in 7.3.1.3
