Description: I find the Paragraph Style widget in the toolbar and sidebar extremely useful. As a heavy style user, I think it would be similarly useful to have a widget for character styles as well. It's irritating to have to switch to the character style page of the styles toolbar in order to see and change character styles, far more so than other types of styles since they are used for small, frequent strings of text. A widget for list styles (not to mention frames and pages) is less critical and possibly overkill, so I am not considering that here. In the sidebar, I imagine a drop-down followed by the same two buttons as the current paragraph style widget. Labels would be needed. I propose inline labels, though headings above would still be fairly compact if horizontal space is too precious. Quick text mock-up: ------------------------------------------ - Style Paragraph: [Text Body ] [Btn] [Btn] Character: [Default ] [Btn] [Btn] ------------------------------------------ The same widgets should be available in the toolbar, but probably not included in the Formatting or Standard (Single) toolbars by default like the paragraph widgets are. It might be worth including by default in the Formatting (Styles) toolbar as a replacement for the limited selection of style buttons. (In reply to Kenneth Hanson from comment #1) > (Is it okay to mark my own bug needsUXEval?) Yes, it's O.K., but you also have to add Design Team in cc: (I did it for you)
Absolutely and it's part of the proposal at https://design.blog.documentfoundation.org/2019/11/05/proposal-to-conveniently-highlight-and-inspect-styles-in-libreoffice-writer/
Thanks Heiko, I had forgotten about that. I definitely look forward to it being implemented. In the meantime, my proposed enhancement should be much easier to implement, since it operates exactly the same way as existing features. It also serves a different purpose, that is, instant access with minimal screen real estate requirements. Please consider it along these lines.
Isn't this a duplicate of bug 88512 - TOOLBAR/SIDEBAR: Character style drop down control uno command?
(In reply to Thomas Lendo from comment #5) > Isn't this a duplicate of bug 88512 - TOOLBAR/SIDEBAR: Character style drop > down control uno command? I appreciate your reminder. I'm eager to see it implemented as well. Your proposed enhancement sounds promising, especially with its alignment to existing features and its focus on providing instant access with minimal screen space. I'll certainly consider it with these aspects in mind. Thank you for your thoughtful suggestion! The information you shared is very helpful. Thanks a lot https://www.uniondevelopers.com
@Thomas Lendo It is insofar as the command is needed in order to add the widget. But the user cannot customize the sidebar, and the developers would have to change the default settings for the appropriate toolbar(s). I'm not sure what the conditions for "Mark as duplicate" are.
For now, I will add a dependency to the cited bug.
The fix for Bug 131761 on the Character Style dropdown widget will be a welcome update. Improving this dropdown’s functionality will enhance user experience, making it easier to apply styles consistently across text elements. Streamlined character styling is especially valuable for users working on design-heavy or text-rich projects.
