Description Alexander 2020-05-23 19:24:51 UTC
Description:
"General Error. General input/output error." occurs if i try to import (drag&drop) a pdf file with a signature. I write a letter in Pages. Then i "print" a pdf out of it. I open the pdf with "Vorschau" an put my signature in it. If i try to import this file now to LibreOffice office to convert the pdf in to pdf/a, the "General Error. General input/output error." occurs. Without the signature there ist no problem.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.print a pdf out of pages
2.sign the pdf with Vorschau App
3.drag & drop to libra office

Actual Results:
"General Error. General input/output error." occurs if i try to import (drag&drop) a pdf file with a signature. I write a letter in Pages. Then i "print" a pdf out of it. I open the pdf with "Vorschau" an put my signature in it. If i try to import this file now to LibreOffice office to convert the pdf in to pdf/a, the "General Error. General input/output error." occurs. Without the signature there ist no problem.

Expected Results:
import of the file

LibreOffice is not a PDF editor--*all* we will do is filter import a PDF. Any 'signature' would have no meaning. And if PDF is has security set--i.e. requires a password to open--we do.

After the filter imported objects have been worked with in one of the LO modules, a new PDF export document (with signature and password security) can be created.

That said, the filter import should not crash with "General input/output error".

Please follow your workflow to prepare a example PDF with signature and attach (include password if any).

This is a pdf file that ist created in the way i reported the bug. it was a pages document that's printed into a pdf using Mac OS printing-tool. No Problem to import in that state. But after adding my signature at it with "Vorschau" App, the pdf will not be imported to LibreOffice: "General Error.General input/output error." occurs.

Confirming with

Version : 6.4.4.2
Build ID : 3d775be2011f3886db32dfd395a6a6d1ca2630ff
Threads CPU : 4; OS : Mac OS X 10.15.4; UI Render : par défaut; VCL: osx;
Locale : fr-FR (fr_FR.UTF-8); Langue IHM : fr-FR
Calc: threaded

The behaviour is inconsistent to say the least :

(1) if I drag and drop the PDF file containing the signature object onto the Dock icon of LO, nothing happens.

(2) if I drag and drop the PDF file containing the signature object onto the StartCenter, I get the error message.

(3) if I try to open the file via the File > Open dialog, I get the error message.

(4) if I try to open the file as in (3) and apply the filetype filter for opening PDF in Writer, I get the error message.

(5) if I try to open the file as in (3) and apply the filetype filter for opening PDF in Impress, I get the error message.

(6) if I try to open the file as in (3) and apply the filetype filter for opening PDF in Draw, I get the error message.

If I try the same thing with LO Vanilla

Version : 6.4.4.2
Build ID : 3d775be2011f3886db32dfd395a6a6d1ca2630ff
Threads CPU : 4; OS : Mac OS X 10.15.4; UI Render : par défaut; VCL: osx;
Locale : fr-FR (fr_FR.UTF-8); Langue IHM : fr-FR
Calc: threaded

and drag and drop the file onto the Dock icon, the file is loaded into Writer, but is essentially gibberish, as it attempts a flat decode :

%PDF-1.3
%
4 0 obj
<< /Length 5 0 R /Filter /FlateDecode >>
stream

This is because LO Vanilla doesn't appear to have any PDF import suppport included.

This was wrongly marked as MacOS but is reproducible in Win and Lin, also 7.4+.
Could be a duplicate of bug 106057.

Dear Alexander,

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today, LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice.

If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice.

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular meaning that is not
appropriate in this case)

If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a REGRESSION. To do so:
1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

2. Test your bug
3. Leave a comment with your results.
4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat: https://web.libera.chat/?settings=#libreoffice-qa
