Description: The calc Find/Replace dialog has a checkbox to only find/match if the string matches an entire cell. This option lacking in the Find toolbar, which is a much more convenient location for this needed function. OpenOffice's Find toolbar uses the checkbox in the Find/Replace dialog, which is persistent, but in LibreOffice, it's neither persistent nor effective for the toolbar. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open spreadsheet with cell containing e.g. "Hell", "Hello" 2. On Find Toolbar, search for "Hell", it will match "Hello". 3. If there were a "Entire Cell" checkbox like on the Find/Replace dialog, it would then not find cells with "Hello". Actual Results: N/A Expected Results: N/A Reproducible: Always User Profile Reset: No Additional Info: Possibly could have an optional "Entire Cell" toolbar widget that could be added or removed to the Find Toolbar, but if its removed, then it's unclear what the default behavior should be (e.g. match entire cell, or not). Note that OpenOffice has essentially this capability, as described in the description.
While I always voted against overloading the simple findbar with extended options we did it in the past.
no objection from me
We discussed the proposal in the design meeting and decided to keep the quickfind bar plain and simple. It's cluttered right now and adding options is a can of worms. Searching for entire cells is (almost) as fast with the dialog as using the quickfind bar.
Hmm, the comment above is (IMO) an inaccurate and unfair characterization. re: ...decided to keep the quickfind bar plain and simple... As in the original submission (under additional info), why not let the user decide whether to add or remove a new "entire cell" widget? That's true for nearly every other flavor of find (having a widget that's addable to the Find Bar), but since there's currently no widget for "entire cell", the user has no choice. If you only object to the clutter, how about creating the widget and have it *not* on the Find Toolbar, by default? re: ... Searching for entire cells is (almost) as fast with the dialog .. Only if the user keeps the Find/Replace dialog up persistently, which is *alot* more screen clutter than the single widget. Especially if user is running the spreadsheet full-screen. Especially since the dialog isn't resizeable (unlike the toolbar). Especially when the searched item is underneath the dialog window. Lastly, as mentioned in the original submission, alternatively the Find toolbar could work like it does in OpenOffice, by using the current (global, or per-document) state of the an "entire cell" boolean. The user could set that state via the find/replace dialog, then close the dialog and then just use the find toolbar. Please reconsider this "WONTFIX", for the reasons above.
Nope, we discussed it already and wont change it. It's not personal offence! It's just against your personal opinion! Feel free to support our course. https://libreoffice.org/donate/
(In reply to frankshih from comment #4) > Hmm, the comment above is (IMO) an inaccurate and unfair characterization. I'm sorry that you feel like this. Be assured we discuss all requests carefully and always balance benefit vs effort and drawbacks. Consider that many users wish their personal workflow would be easier and custom-tailored. We have to focus on what exactly the feature is meant for and keep it simple for the majority. You can always disagree with the decision and reopen the ticket. The UX people just give recommendations. And if there is no developer interested in realizing the request you are also free to implement it yourself, I would even help with code pointers. We are open source, it's your project as it is ours. > ...using the current ... state of the an "entire cell" boolean. > The user could set that state via the find/replace dialog, then > close the dialog and then just use the find toolbar. It has the disadvantage that you are not aware of the actual configuration. The idea has been discussed several times, see bug 128781 or bug 72080.
