Additional Info:
1. In your document, go to Tools > Chapter Numbering
2. In the Numbering / Separator section, right-clicking in the Before or After fields should have an option: Insert Field
3. Alternatively, this functionality could be accessed from Styles > Edit Styles > Outline & Numbering (which would be a more intuitive place for the Chapter Numbering as well).

Thanks for the idea, but use case is not really clear to me. What kind of field do you like to have before or after chapter numbering?

My use case is similar to this:

https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/4331/how-can-i-have-a-custom-numbered-field/

I needed to have a range of dates in my headings, and since there were more than just a few I wanted to automate it. Just thought such a feature would be a cool alternative to copy / paste, even if that certainly got the job done.

Thank you. Now I can understand use-case better. But I don't think, that this should be part of Chapter Numbering

I don't get it. Add the header, use Insert > Field > More fields > Docinformation > Subject, for example, to have File > Properties > Description > Subject in the header.

If you have more predefined option for the advanced menu in mind (the blue dropdown), please specify what exactly is needed and why.

As far as I understand it, the field should be part of chapter numbering (and not part of the heading text)

Autotext appended somehow? Or a list style not using any of the numbering options but current time? Sounds crazy (and wouldn't be possible due to ODF restrictions).

@alf: Please describe your use case so we get an idea how special your request is.

I'll try to explain the use case better:

As I said in comment #2 it is similar to https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/4331/how-can-i-have-a-custom-numbered-field/

In my case I have very many very short chapters that need headings like

Day 1 - July 30 - Some heading
Day 2 - July 31 - Some other heading
Day 3 - August 1 - Yet another heading

I solved this by using Tools > Chapter Numbering for the Day N part, inserted a custom numbered field for the date in the first heading (Insert > Fields > More fields > Variables) and copy / pasted / edited this to each following heading.

I could not find a way to insert a date range, so I settled on a numbering sequence starting at the desired date. For the next month I had to restart the numbering manually.

Copy / paste got the job done, but with so many chapters it would make sense to automate it.

I thought a nice way to do that could be through an ability to insert whichever field you need in a heading and that the logical place for that would be in the Chapter Numbering dialog.

Regina, any ideas regarding variable fields in outline headings? Doubt this is possible.
