Works fine on screen but print yields random non characters. PDF export yields empty document. Featherpad prints OK.

Andy, can you try LibreOffice from snap, appimage or flatpack package?

Rule of thumb is search before reporting. 
There are other Lubuntu bugs, looks duplicate of 134078

PDF export looks duplicate to https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=132764 which itself is marked duplicate.
