Looks trivial and clear to change page style via right-click in Status bar and not in Dialog. NotABug. You should search first and shoot bug report later.

But NAB indicated a need to check Documentation. I searched Help for "change page style" and couldn't find it.
So I confirm as Documentation to add this "change page style via right-click in Status bar", I think it should be in https://help.libreoffice.org/7.1/en-US/text/swriter/01/05040000.html.

Not sure if this is that "self-evident". Yes, I amid missed they Status bar option.

However, the Format -> Page (Style) is pretty lucrative position to look (based on "Word"/WordPad). Or differently said, there is no Menu -> Format equivalent. And the status bar is not a required menu item to have (similar to the sidebar; also option

So my opinion there should be a dialog item. Else you fiddle with 'Organizer or change orientation in the page tab. And that's probably something which shouldn't be done..

When I look into LibreOffice online-help, type "page style" into the search bar and chose "page styles -- changing" do I always end up onto the side"(1). Defining Different Headers and Footers" but not a side explaining me the different ways to change the style itself.

@Timur
1. Open attachment 165176 [details]

I have rotated the first page using "right-click in Status bar". I pressed CTRL+ENTER. Now I intend to set second page the default again. "Right-click in Status bar" doesn't deliver

Sidebar -> Styles -> Page styles -> Double clicking doesn't either..

Now you have use
(A) blue break header, Text Flow tab. Set page style.
(B) Or Page Style (at the first page) -> Next style -> Default page style

------------------
Second example
1. Open attachment 165176 [details]
2. Go the second page & Press CTRL+Enter
3. Go to page 2 -> Format -> Page Style -> Next page style -> Default style.
4. Result: Page 2 & 3 will be affected.
5. Now change your mind. Cursor on page 2 or 3 "Right-click in Status bar" & Click Landscape -> Nothing happens

@Justin
Sorry, for distributing those page style issues around.. always taking another route.. Comment 7 shows a number of issues. Comment 0 and answer in comment 3

The issue, you start to combine different approaches. And you even need to. And different context makes it really hard to follow. See also Bug 136348 comment 3.

And also bug 136490.

It doesn't make it (always) any easier that pages styles are attached to paragraph's (or me not being used to that) This is (partly) solved by the blue page break bar. Except Page 1 has none. So you need Paragraph dialog/ Text flow tab (and you still need to know). Or you use Status bar page style/ or Sidebar -> Styles -> Page Style.
You can't use Insert -> More breaks -> Manual break. You could use Format -> Page Style -> Page orientation -> But that's changing the orientation for the default page (so what you actually want)

If add new page with CTRL+ENTER, and want change the rotation, you can't use Sidebar -> Styles -> Page Style nor Status bar page style; this will convert also the first page.
You now need to use Insert -> More breaks -> Manual break for inserting the page break or Format -> Paragraph -> Text Flow. Or access the paragraph style from the blue header bar

Alternatively you can go the first page/ Format -> Page -> Style and set next style. But that's of course not what you supposed to do (if I understand it correctly)

You can't see if a page break 'contains' an explicit page style setting (could be the same as the previous page) or non. Which isn't helping either.

Example file number 3

1. open the attached file
2. Select the first page
3. Right Click status bar (page style) and set it to default or sidebar -> Styles -> Page styles. Double click default (every page will change)

They only route. Format -> Paragraph -> Text Flow -> Change to default. Or uncheck With page Style (which is weird.. where is the current page formatting based on??)
Or uncheck Page break (why a page break before the first page; doesn't make sense)

It's already not obvious to set page style by going to Format -> Paragraph.
The text flow tab (nor would I think of text flow tab)
Nor I would consider checking page break (which doesn't make sense at the first page).

Example file Example nr 4

1. Open the attached file
2. Go the second page
3. Press CTRL+Enter
4. Status bar -> Right Click Page style & Select Envelop (cursor on page 3)

Result: Page 2 changes to envelop; page 3 stays the same (because of Next Paragraph setting which implicitly set)

Example file

1. Open the attached file
2. Delete the page break on page 2

-> Page 3 will change formatting too, as it's based on Next Style of Page 2 (being deleted)..

There could be a dialog.. warning for this, of even setting they Paragraph Page Style for Next page (Keep current formatting for the next page).

This information is already provided on that page.
Use: View - Styles (etc.), which takes you to the Status Bar and context menu

(I can see a "hyphen" is missing in that sequence, which I will add, along with a keyboard shortcut (F11/Command+T) ) .

In short: Everything seems to be all right with Documentation -- but are there other changes / improvements needed on those pages? now that I am making these small corrections?
Comment 14 sdc.blanco 2020-10-18 09:43:18 UTC
@Telesto: Was your original enhancement request that there should be a special menu item (e.g., "Format - First Page") that specifically changes the style of the first page -- so that a user does not need to know that they must select the first page and then use "Format - Page Style"? Changing Status to NEEDINFO.

In that case, the "Component" should be changed back from "Documentation" to "Writer" and the summary changed to your original: "Dialog is missing a setting for changing page style for first page" (and then it would be appropriate to have UXEval -- on this clarified request)

I confirm this -- where you are searching in the index. The bookmarks could be better, but please file this as a separate bug report, where "Page styles -- changing" should probably point to swriter/guide/pagestyles.html (see comment 13 for link).

This patch should address the documentation problems that were raised here.
Comment 18 Timur 2021-03-09 13:01:03 UTC
hi Seth.

Idea was to add that page style can be changed via right-click in Status bar.
But I don't see it in help, although commit has "clarify access to Status bar".
Please explain.
