Description cybermonktitan 2020-08-21 18:41:30 UTC
Upgraded from 6.4.x (about latest) to 7.0.0.3 on two machines, my main desktop (homebrew gaming rig) and my MS Surface Go (tablet). Both run Windows 10 2004.

Writer runs smoothly on the desktop, but when I start writer on the tablet the window appears with a blank document area and after a few seconds it crashes.

The crash is consistent and has been repeated with and without opening an existing document. The differences between the two setups (to my knowledge): hardware, some settings (in particular colour profiles) and the tablet's installation has a few optional components less.

I have also tried to open all the other main programs (core, base, calc, draw, impress, math) but they all start fine. Writer also starts fine in safe mode.

For now I'll be reinstalling the latest 6.x since I do want to get my writing done, but I am available for testing.

(Severity set to major since Writer is effectively unusable this way.)

Since it works with Safe mode, could you give a try at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps ?

Thanks for the pointer. I have done some testing and indeed it seems to be the upgrade of the old profile, in particular related to the configuration of the notebook bar.

I have been able to create a pretty small PoC. This includes some high level settings to enable the notebook bar and a configuration for, I think, a single bar with the left margin and right margin settings. These two together cause a crash, removing either of them does not. There were more places in my original configuration that caused crashes but since editing large amounts of XML isn't super fast I've brought it down to one case. If this one is actually solved I have a backup of the entire configuration to see if there are more crashes.

The PoC is just the user part of the profile and has been tested as-is (i.e. without any other files in the user/ folder). I have verified that it causes the exact same crash as in the crash report. I have also verified it on my desktop, where the PoC also causes a crash.

Moving ahead I will reset my profile on my tablet so I can work, but I will keep backups for future testing.

Small 6.x profile that causes the crash

Even with your specific profile + gtk3 or gen rendering, I can't reproduce this.
I'm stuck then.

Bug 136136 sounds similar and seems to be fixed in master. So could you please try to reproduce it with a master build from http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/current.html ? You can install it alongside the standard version. I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' if the bug is still present in the master build.

Yes, it does seem to be solved in today's master. I also verified my testing method by going through the exact same process with the original 7.0 installer which indeed crashes.

My entire old configuration now loads without problems.
